Barcelona is one of the most iconic cities in the world, but Gaudi architecture and La Rambla aside, what lies beyond the tourist-laden exterior of this luxury cruise port?

If you want to explore off the beaten track next time you dock in Barcelona, make sure you explore these six hidden gems.

Parc del Guinardó

Forget the long lines and crowds clamouring to admire the view from Park Güell. Head instead to Parc del Guinardó, where you can appreciate an even more stunning view in an oasis of calm. Tall pine trees cast shadows over paths tread mostly by locals, while the remains of bunkers and gun turrets from the Spanish Civil War add a touch of Spanish history to your stroll.

Sala Hiroshima

This contemporary theatre space is a hidden gem near the cultural centre of Montjuic. Visitors can see experimental performances, films, fashion shows and concerts, or simply meet up with friends for drinks and tapas in the quirky Hiroshima bar.

Palau Macaya

It would be a crime to visit Barcelona without seeking out at least one piece of Gaudi architecture, but to escape the crowds, head for Palau Macaya. This elegant modernist palace is open for visitors between certain hours, during which time you can admire the elaborate courtyard. The palace also hosts free cinema sessions and art exhibitions.

Barcelona City History Museum

The Picasso Museum is a must-visit for art lovers, but the fascinating (and much quieter) City History Museum is the perfect place for peaceful discovery. The museum itself is spread across three levels, but the part not to miss is the underground excavation of Barcelona from the Roman era.

Parc del Laberint

Despite being Barcelona’s oldest park, Parc del Laberint is a true hidden gem. This nine hectare retreat is full of romantic groves, pretty waterfalls and beautiful sculptures of mythological figures. Of course, as the parks name suggests, there is also a labyrinthine hedge maze that is the perfect place to (literally) lose yourself for an afternoon.
