Adamstown Cruise Port

Adamstown is the only settlement, and therefore the capital, of the Pitcairn Islands, located amongst a group of small islands in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Peru. With a population of only 48 people, Adamstown currently holds the record for being the smallest capital in the world. The island is famous for being colonised after the ‘mutiny on the Bounty' by the mutineers and their Tahitian companions. This incredibly secluded and peaceful island makes a fantastic cruise stop for people looking to discover an undisturbed and sparsely populated corner of the globe and see what life is like on this tiny island settlement.

Sightseeing in Adamstown

Although the Pitcairn Islands are tiny and sparsely populated, there are still several sight-seeing opportunities available to tourists visiting Adamstown. Visitors may wish to hike to certain interesting areas of the island such as the highest point, which reaches 337m above sea level or the Gudgeon; a large sea level cave which hides beautiful sandy beaches. Other notable locations on the Pitcairn Islands include Garners Ridge, Down Rope, which has ancient Polynesian petroglyphs painted on it faces, or Fletcher Christian's cave. Alternatively, other sights worth seeing include:

The Bounty

The famous remains of ‘the Bounty' can be found in Bounty Bay. The ship was intentionally burnt and sunk during the well-known ‘mutiny on the bounty' and although it has been thoroughly investigated and picked over by divers, the remains can still be viewed from Bounty Bay. ‘The Bounty's' anchor is displayed in front of the public hall in the town square of Adamstown and can be viewed by anyone visiting the island.

Adamstown Museum

The museum in Adamstown contains many interesting historical artefacts, including one of the Bounty's cannons alongside other items removed from the ship and displayed for the public. Other intriguing items on display include old stamps of local importance and copies of national geographic which feature Pitcairn and surrounding islands.

Mrs Turpin

In the early 20th century a Galapagos tortoise named Mrs Turpin was left on the island. The tortoise is still alive today and can be found on the northwest shore of the Pitcairn Island.

Shopping in Adamstown

The residents of Adamstown generally produce most of their own food and share it amongst the community, so food shops can be few and far between. The Pitcairn Islanders do often sell hand-made arts and crafts to tourists such as woven baskets or model ships. Locally produced honey is also available to buy and rare postage stamps from the island are often popular with collectors. General facilities, such as the doctor's surgery, post office and general store can be found in the centre of Adamstown but are only open a for few days per week.

Eating out in Adamstown

As an island community, the local cuisine is heavily seafood based. Local dishes include deep-fried bluefish, tuna, and whitefish amongst other fish-based meals. The majority of the food on the island is grown and produced by the residents of Adamstown and eating out can often be a new and cultural experience for tourists.
