Alexandria, Egypt Cruise Port

Egypt's second city lies in the far north on the country's Mediterranean coast. Founded by Alexander the Great and once the city of Queen Cleopatra, Alexandria was the main port of the Hellenic Empire and now stands as both an historic treasure trove and a bustling modern town.

Whether you're keen to see Egypt's incredible ancient history up close or just fascinated by modern life all around the Mediterranean, Alexandria is an adventure not to be missed.

Sightseeing in Alexandria

Ancient Alexandria has some of the richest history of any place on Earth and even boasts a sphinx of its own. But equally impressive is the modern side to the city, which preserves much of the ancient heritage found hidden below its foundations:

Temple of Taposiris

In the Abusir area of Alexandria stand the remains of the Temple of Taposiris Magna, built in the Ptolemaic era (around 300 BC) and dedicated to the god Osiris but later used as a Christian church. Visitors are able to see the ancient ruins of the outer walls, as well as a scale reconstruction of the legendary Pharos lighthouse nearby, built by Ptolemy II. Other ancient ruins in the area include a burial ground and public baths built during the reign of Emperor Justinian.

Alexandria National Museum

This gated white museum holds a wealth of ancient treasures, charting Alexandria's historic golden age and preserving its heritage. Collections include antiquities from the ancient Muslim and Coptic faiths as well as personal belongings from the denizens of ancient Alexandria itself – notably jewellery and a varied range of statues and figurines. The museum also houses finds from the Hellenistic era, which followed Alexander's reign. If you thought that a trip to Cairo was necessary to see the Egyptian mummies, think again – the museum in Alexandria exhibits some regal mummies of its own, with golden burial masks and beautifully painted burial wrappings.

Citadel of Qaitbay

Built by Sultan Qaitbay in the 1300s, this fort stands on the original foundations of the Pharos lighthouse on a peninsula stretching out into the bay. The ancient lighthouse was the pride of ancient Alexandria and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, being one of the tallest man-made structures in the world during its prime. However it fell to ruins in early medieval times after sustaining heavy damage during a series of earthquakes in the area, and much of its remains have since been found beneath the waves nearby. Qaitbay citadel is believed to have been built using stones taken from the lighthouse, which feature in the construction of its entrance and the mosque inside the fortress walls.

Shopping in Alexandria

Alexandria's cultural wealth is reflected in its rich choice of shopping, with bakeries and fresh produce markets standing out as particular attractions for shoppers in the area. The city's souq market offers visitors a glance at everyday life in Alexandria, where local shoppers come for the freshest meat, seafood and produce you're likely to find.

Eating out in Alexandria

Alexandria has a great choice of fantastic places to dine, particularly when it comes to fresh, locally-caught seafood. Some of the foremost establishments in the city stand near the seafront, serving delicious Egyptian cuisine to locals and visitors alike; while other eateries are known more for the entertainment they provide, such as traditional belly dancing performances.
