Ambon, Indonesia

Ambon is one of many attractive and interesting islands within the Moluccas archipelago of Indonesia and is home to a towering volcano and lush forests filled with flora, fauna and wildlife. Sight-seeing in Ambon

Scuba diving and snorkelling are very popular in the clean ocean waters off the coast of Ambon, particularly at Liang, Natsepa and Latuhalat beaches. Rainforest and mountain hikes are a great way to appreciate the wonderful scenery found across the island, from the imposing volcanic mountain to the lush wooded areas that dominate the island. Ambon's rich culture and notorious heritage is on display at the many historic structures and monument located across the island.

Ambon War Cemetery

The Ambon War Cemetery contains around 2000 graves of servicemen killed in the South Pacific during the Second World War. The site was designed by Ralph Hobday and is laid out as a succession of terraces joined together by a central flight of steps. The cemetery contains the tombs of mainly Australian and British soldiers alongside those whose lives were lost aboard merchant ships attacked during the war.

Siwa Lima Museum

Founded in 1973, the Siwa Lima Museum consists of two main buildings, one of which is a museum of ethnography and the other a maritime museum, both surrounded by lush forests. The museums contains a range of fascinating artefacts including traditional and historic outfits, musical instruments, weapons, ceramics and pottery as well as three huge skeletons of whales that have washed up on the shores of Ambon over the years. The museum is open every weekday and visitors are welcome to take photos inside.


Ambons is home to several immaculate sandy beaches along its beautiful coastline, the most popular of which include Pintu Kota, Liang, Natsepa, Namalatu and Latuhalat beaches. These excellent coastal areas are very popular with scuba divers, as the oceans contain a fantastic range of coral and marine life.

Shopping in Ambon

Plaza Ambon is an excellent place to pick up gifts and souvenirs whilst on the Indonesian island. The area contains a variety of shops and stalls selling a range of useful items and quirky mementos. The Citra Supermarket, located in the centre of Ambon, is the best place on the island to buy general amenities such as groceries and local produce.

Eating Out in Ambon

Ambon boasts a number of brilliant restaurants and cafes where visitors can find authentic Indonesian cuisine and spectacular views of the island's coastal scenery. Seafood is particularly popular on the island and visitors should try local favourites including baked and grilled fish as well as Nasi ikan, a local rice and fish dish.
