Beechey Island, Canada Cruise Port

Situated with the Arctic Archipelago of Canada's Nunavut territory is the remote and awe-inspiring Beechey Island. The island is famous for its connection with Arctic exploration and is a cruise destination not for the faint hearted. Beechey Island's natural landscape is barren but beautiful and home to very little flora or fauna due to its Arctic climate. Observant and patient travellers may however catch a glimpse of an Arctic fox or some of the Arctic marine life during their time on the island. The region is unpopulated due to its harsh environment and therefore has very few facilities for visitors, apart from the occasional camp set up by teams of researchers and scientists working in the area, so intrepid travellers will need to be prepared even for a short stay in the region. Beechey Island is an amazing cruise destination for adventurous travellers and what it lacks in convenience and comfort, it makes up for in stunning scenery and important history and heritage.

Sight-seeing in Beechey Island

Beechey Island has been awarded the status of Site of Territorial Historical Significance by the government of the Northwest Territories of Canada. The island has earned this title due to its years as a major stopping point for Arctic explorers and researchers. Beechey Island's major appeal is its natural environment and scenery, which can seem as daunting as it is spectacular. The island has claimed the lives of ill-prepared Arctic explorers over the centuries as the climate is particularly unforgiving. Bold travellers are welcome to venture out on the barren plains to observe the unique scenery and wildlife found on the island and visit the several sites of historical importance located there.

Frankin Memorial

Sitting in the heart of Beechey Island is the Franklin Memorial, a collection of graves commemorating the Arctic explorers who lost their lives during a dangerous expedition in 1845. The expedition, led by Captain Sir John Franklin, was destined to fail with tragic consequences when, after losing several crew members, Frankin's ship became stuck in ice within the Victoria Strait of the Canadian Arctic. Eventually Frankin and his strong crew of 128 men were lost. Beechey Island's memorial is a stark reminder of the price that these brave men paid in the name of science and exploration.

Terror Bay

Despite its disconcerting name, Terror Bay is one of Beechey Island's most significant beauty spots. The bay stretches into the distance and has a uniquely tranquil environment where visitors can relax in peaceful surrounding.

Erebus

Another of Beechey Island's highlights is Erebus beach and port. This serene stretch of land is the islands main port and offer visitors a calm starting point from which to explore the island.

Shopping in Beechey Island

As a remote and unpopulated area, Beechey Island has very few facilities. Shopping on the island is not really an option, but some visitors may wish to take a natural memento away with them as long as there actions do not damage the environment.

Eating Out in Beechey Island

Eating out on Beechey Island is impossible due to the region's sparse, barren landscape. Make sure to pack your own meals before setting off to explore the island.
