German Emigration Centre

The German Emigration Centre celebrates the history of German emigration and is the largest museum on the subject in Europe. Bremerhaven was once Germany's largest port and therefore the centre of emigration in the country. The museum also features a remarkable 1950s themed cinema and recently won the esteemed European Museum of the Year Award for its unique exhibitions. 

The German Maritime Museum

The Shipping Museum in Bremerhaven has a fascinating range of nautical exhibits and artefacts including a historic cog dating back to 1380 named the Hansekogge as well as an impressive Type XXI U-Boat, a three-masted ship named the Seute Deum and the Seefalke, a tugboast from 1924. The museum is an excellent tribute to Germany's rich sea-faring history.  

Zoo am Meer

The Bremerhaven Zoo, officially named Zoo am Meer, houses a collection of magnificent wildlife from across the world. The zoo's most popular exhibits include the polar bears, Humboldt penguins, South American sea-lions and the harbour seals alongside a wide variety of other animals.

Shopping in Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven is home to an amazing selection of shopping centres and speciality stores. The Columbus Shopping Centre is a dramatic high-rise building in the centre of town, containing around 70 different retailers and famous brands. Another opulent shopping centre, situated within Bremerhaven, is the Mediterraneo, which covers a huge area of around 9000 square metres with 30 stores and a range of cafes and restaurants. A selection of speciality stores are also open around the town, where visitors can shop for items including electronics, fashion, gifts and souvenirs. 

Eating Out in Bremerhaven

Eating out in Bremerhaven is a wonderful experience, as the town has an outstanding range of cafes, restaurants and bars. Authentic German restaurants serving locally caught seafood dishes as well as a variety of other establishments with international cuisine can be found all over the region. Bremerhaven also has an abundance of affordable snack bars and well-known fast outlets located throughout the town.
