Chios, Greece Cruise Port

Beautiful Chios is the capital of a small Greek island of the same name – home to small traditional villages which wear their folk art on the outside walls of their whitewashed buildings. Chios enjoys a history which stretches back for several millennia, and has a vast array of antiquities on display – both in the clean white halls of its museum, and up on a nearby hilltop in the form of a renowned Byzantine monastery.

Sightseeing in Chios

With such rich history and distinctive culture you'll find plenty of attractions to visit during your time on the island. Here you'll find ancient artefacts in the glass cases of an ultra-modern museum, as well as living museums out in the glorious sunshine, in the form of hilltop monastic buildings and striking Mastica villages, unchanged for centuries.

Nea Moni Monastery

Literally ‘New Monastery', this wonderful Byzantine complex was built in the eleventh century and sits in the hills surrounding Mount Provateio Oros – making for a scenic sightseeing destination during your tour of the island. Inside the monastery you'll find remarkable mosaics in the Renaissance style typical to Macedonia – which have helped this site to earn a place on the UNESCO list as a world heritage site. Once you leave the peaceful halls of the monastery buildings, be sure to get a look at the incredible views of the bay and the surrounding hills.

Archaeological Museum

One of the most popular attractions for visitors to Chios town is the island's museum, housing collections of ancient artefacts including terracotta figures, jewellery, pottery and an impressive array of classical statues. Here you'll even find a famous letter from Alexander the Great to the people of Chios. Wandering the museum, you'll come across skulls, stonework, trinkets and everyday objects that chart no less than eight thousand years of history on the island – making a trip to this museum the perfect way to pack the highlights of so much heritage into a mere couple of hours.

The little town of Pyrgi on the southern side of the island is a must-see destination for visitors to Chios, where the whitewashed alleyways and buildings are covered in elaborate geometric patterns of black and grey – a style known as graffito. You'd be forgiven for thinking that you'd wandered back into the Middle Ages, (if not into an Escher illustration) since much of the town's architecture and relaxed way of life has remained unchanged for centuries. Pay a visit to the beautiful beach nearby, or relax in the town square with an iced Greek coffee.

Shopping in Chios

Chios is best known for its tree gum production, most commonly called Arabic gum – but known locally as ‘tears of Chios'. This golden resin is widely available on Chios, having been used for millennia for its many medicinal properties, from aiding digestion to freshening the breath and whitening the teeth. You'll also find plenty of beautiful folk art in shops around the town, as well as jewellery, antiques and a great choice of sweets to make ideal gifts to take home.

Eating Out in Chios

Taverns, and cafes can be found all over Chios, and those looking for fine dining may want to try the grilled calamari, freshly baked bread and homemade white wine of a traditional Chian restaurant. The fresh air, good soil and plentiful sunlight make for a rich choice when it comes to fresh local produce – the perfect ingredients for a fresh salad to accompany some locally made Mastelo cheese.
