Collioure, France Cruise Port

The beautiful port of Collioure in France lies on the Spanish border, and was once a favourite haunt of the likes of Picasso and Matisse. Here you'll find the wonderfully artisan old town, a wide selection of castles and other historic monuments, harking back to Collioure's history as a border city in the Catalan region. Visitors here will find a combination of rich history, colourful artistic expression and a distinctively relaxed way of life, all set amongst the natural beauty of the rocky, mountainous Vermilion coast.

Sightseeing in Collioure

Collioure's appeal runs deeper than the gorgeous coastline and Mediterranean-style houses that line its narrow old streets. Here you'll find a complete dichotomy between the town's regal, militaristic past and its more recent embrace of modern artistic expression.

Art Musuems

A trip around Museum of Modern Art is essential viewing during your time ashore in Collioure – this is known as the City of Painters, after all. The museum stands out amongst some forty other galleries to be found here in the city, and boasts some 190 works by artists old and new. A half-hour trip further inland can take you to the Ceret Museum of Art, where you'll find works by Chagall, Dali and a collection of some of Picasso's bright, utterly unique ceramics.

Notre Dame des Anges

What began as the city's characteristic lighthouse has since been converted into the bell tower of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels – a bright and peaceful white space with an incredibly elaborate golden altarpiece at its heart. Head back outside and you'll find some amazing photo opportunities of the view across the bay top to the hills beyond – or make your way down towards the harbour to capture the seafront tower with a gorgeous sunset at its back.

Castles

Collioure's strategic position on the coast, so close to the French–Spanish border, has led to a proliferation of forts and castles in centuries past. Here you're free to tour the Chateau Royal, or take the little train up into the hills for the spectacular views from Fort St Elme. You'll also find Fort Dugommier in the vicinity, as well as the Batterie Taillefer and the Round Fort. Arguably the pick of the bunch is the Chateau Royal, an 800-year-old castle which stands right in the heart of Collioure close to the pebble beaches. Here you'll find a warren of passages, halls and ramparts, as well as gallery exhibitions and a great choice of lively local events held throughout the year.

Shopping in Collioure

Shoppers in the City of Art needn't think for long about what to take home with them – and won't be able to move in Collioure's picturesque town centre without stumbling upon a boutique gallery crammed with paintings of every style – particularly colourful homages to Fauvist artists like Matisse and Derain.

Eating Out in Collioure

Collioure's artistic sensibilities also extend to its food, and here you'll be able to taste the fine dining of both the French and Catalan cultures here. Enjoy seafood caught fresh in the harbour, cooked in the rustic Catalan style and washed down with a glass of delicious locally-produced wine; or dine on characteristically opulent French cuisine like veal or partridge, followed by a sorbet or a rich chocolate dessert.
