Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Cruise Port

The city of Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest and richest city, with a population of over 4 million people. The city's mix of exquisite beaches, picturesque harbour, bustling marketplaces and historic buildings make it one of Africa's most desirable tourist locations and an excellent cruise destination. Dar es Salaam's vibrant atmosphere attracts visitors from across the world, boosting the local economy and allowing the city to constantly expand and develop. The fantastic equatorial climate and welcoming environment give the city its charm and unique character.

Sightseeing in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam has an abundance of natural scenery and culture for tourists to experience. Hiking through the nearby Pugu Hills is recommended to view the spectacular natural landscape. Another great day trip opportunity is to take a boat to Bongoyo or Mbudya Island. Bongoyo and Mbudya are small, uninhabited islands just off the coast of Dar es Salaam. The day can be spent on these islands relaxing on the beaches, snorkelling in the crystal clear waters or sitting with a drink at the local bar. Other amazing sight-seeing possibilities in Dar es Salaam include:

Safari

The most popular attraction in Tanzania by far is the Mikumi National Park, which offers brilliant safari excursions. Established in 1964, the park covers a huge area of around 3200km2 and is home to a wide variety of savannah wildlife, including lions, zebras, wildebeest and variety of beautiful flora and fauna. The Tanzanian safaris are a hugely popular attraction and draw tourists from all over the world to experience them.

National Museum

The National Museum of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam takes visitors on a fascinating journey though history. Interesting displays range from famous the fossil discoveries at Olduvai Gorge, ancient African civilisations, artefacts from the Zanzibar slave trade and the German and British colonial periods. The museum also houses a collection of rare vintage cars, including a Rolls Royce used by the first colonial British government.

Kunduchi Wet ‘n' Wild

Dar es Salaam's most popular water park, Kunduch Wet n' Wild, is a fun and exciting attraction for people of all ages. The water park boasts several pools and a range of excellent water slides sure to thrill visitors. There is also a video arcade, children's playground, go-kart track and restaurant attached to the complex, to keep everyone entertained.

Shopping in Dar es Salaam

The city's newest department store, named Mlimani City shopping complex, is a fantastic place to shop in Bar es Salaam. The mall contains many reputable retailers selling well-known brands at affordable prices. For a more traditional Tanzanian shopping experience, consider visiting one of Bar es Salaam's buslting and lively marketplaces. The Mwenge Carvers Market is a great place to buy authentic local arts and crafts with prices ranging from very cheap to quite expensive. It is also worth visiting Kariokoo and Ilala Market where tourist can attempt to haggle for a bargain with stall owners.

Eating Out in Dar es Salaam

Delicious and affordable food can be found all over the city, but many of the best places are located around Zanaki Street. Traditional Tanzanian food, such as grilled meat and BBQ corn on the cob, can be bought on nearly every street and more familiar western meals are also readily available. Popular fast food outlets are also distributed throughout the city for people looking for a quick and easy meal.
