Fethiye, Turkey Cruise Port

See a different side to Turkey with a trip to Fethiye on the southwest coast – home to ancient ruins, clear seas rolling onto pristine beaches, and beautiful wildlife in the surrounding wetlands. Relax on the sand or head inland to explore rock tombs; or take a stroll around the town itself where you'll come across the enchanting old town, covered by a canopy of vines.

Sightseeing in Fethiye

Fethiye offers its visitors some fascinating ruins to explore, from the magnetic draw of the Roman sarcophagi and monumental tombs in the town itself to the much more modern ghost town of Kayakoy in the hills nearby.

Lycian tombs

If you have time to wander around Fethiye during your time ashore, be sure to keep an eye out for the Roman sarcophagi that dot the town. But even these fascinating monuments pale in comparison to the Lycian tombs up on the hills behind the town, whose pillars and roofs were once carved into the rock face, and sport elaborate designs which have long since eroded in parts. Walking around the overgrown fascias might well put you in mind of similar structures in Petra. These are a world away from the red desert canyons of Jordan, though – up in the high ground beyond Fethiye, you'll get some incredible views across the town and the sea.

An excursion could well give you the opportunity to see the beautiful wildlife native to the area's beaches and wetlands; not least the endangered loggerhead turtles which struggle across the sandy shores to lay their eggs. You'll be able to see flamingos wading through the tide, and pelicans flocking down onto the water by the surrounding marshland.

Even the spooky monoliths of the ancient stone tombs behind the town are nothing compared to the ghost town of Kayakoy. Once a bustling settlement in the hills ever since it was founded in the 1200s, every single house was abandoned in the 1920s when the Greek population was called upon to leave during the mass-scale exchange between Greek and Turkish nationals. The result is a fascinating, if tragic, tour of Kayakoy where countless houses have fallen into ruins, and squares and public buildings stand silent and empty.

Shopping in Fethiye

The best shopping in Fethiye can be found around the beautiful old town area. Here you'll find a huge selection of shops stocking carpets and clothing, as well as masterful ceramics and gold and silver jewellery for the perfect souvenirs of your time here.

Eating Out in Fethiye

You haven't truly experienced Turkey until you've tried the cuisine, and Fethiye offers a great choice of cafes and restaurants to fill your rumbling stomach after your sightseeing adventures. Relax with a coffee and try an authentic kebab platter, or head to a restaurant where you might be invited down into expansive wine cellars to try some of the bottles before you dine.
