Haikou, China Cruise Port

Situated on the northern end of the Hainan Island, Haikou is the capital city of the Hainan Province in southern China. Haikou is a city of important historical significance, due to its collection of ancient and historical buildings. Historic Structures

Several tremendous buildings and religious structures of historical significance are located across the city of Haikou. The Wugong Temple is a Ming dynasty structure dedicated to several officials who were sent to the island of Hainan after speaking out against the mainland government. The temple is surrounded by stunning natural features such as lily-filled ponds, towering palm trees and meandering bridges.

 The Tomb of Hairui is the final resting place of a renowned government official from the Ming dynasty, constructed in 1589. The tomb contains an impressive archway and many wonderful statues of animals and creatures. Majestic evergreen trees have also been planted around the outside of the gravesite.

Other historical structures in Haikou include a 19th century coastal fort named Xiuying Battery and the Qiongtai Academy, built in commemoration of Qui Jin, one of the Ming dynasty's most brilliant scholars.

Parks and Gardens

The Haikou Shishan Crater Cluster National Geological Park comprises of around 40 dormant volcanoes and 30 caves, covering an area of over 100km2. Visitors flock to this amazing national park to observe the incredible and unique scenery on offer.

The Dongzhai Harbour Mangrove Natural Reserve Area and the Red Forest Nature Reserve is an unusual conservation area containing a marvellous and scenic evergreen forest. During high tide, the bottoms of the trees are surrounded by water, which creates an ideal breeding ground for fish and shrimp. Exciting guided boast trips across the reserve are available to visitors at certain times of the year.

The Hainan Provincial Museum celebrates the culture and history of Hainan Island and the nearby Haikou Museum of Contemporary Art displays the work of local artists.

Shopping in Haikou

Haikou is the centre for trade and commerce on Hainan and therefore boasts many fantastic shopping experiences. A range of supermarkets, speciality stores, shopping malls and marketplaces are located across the region, selling a variety of local gifts and souvenirs.

Eating Out in Haikou

A selection of delicious local dishes alongside a range of familiar international cuisine can be found in restaurants across the city. Authentic and popular local meals include seafood, Wenchang Chicken, Jiaji Duck and Dongshan Mutton, which are readily available in many of Haikou's excellent eateries.
