The city of Lautoka is the second largest district of Fiji, situated on the north western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's largest and most populated island. The area is a great place from which to explore this exotic Fijian destination, as it is located adjacent to the vibrant town of Nadi and on the opposite coast to the nation's capital city and main seaport, Suwa. Lautoka has earned its nickname ‘Sugar City' through its many years of sugar cane cultivation, which alongside tourism is one the region's main sources of commerce. Sightseeing in Lautoka

The Sugar Mill

Lautoka's reputation as a district of sugar production is confirmed by the impressive Lautoka Sugar Mill. Opened in 1903, the sugar mill is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is the region's biggest employer of local people by far. Visitor can arrange a tour of the facilities with friendly local guides to learn more about the area's long history in the sugar cane industry.

The Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens in Lautoka contain an abundance of stunning tropical plant species, most of which are labelled to help amateur horticulturalists identify them easily. This colourful attraction also has a fun-filled children's play area situated opposite to it, to keep kid's thoroughly entertained.

Hare Krishna Temple

Lautoka's Hare Krishna Temple, otherwise known as the Sri Sri Krishna Kaliya temple, was opened in 1977 and is a friendly local building where tourists can gain further insight into the region's rich and intriguing culture as well as meet and speak to some of the local people.

The streets of downtown Lautoka are lined with superb shops, stalls and a bustling marketplaces, where visitors can pick up a range of items from gifts and souvenirs, such as local arts and crafts, to general amenities and provisions.
