Sometime referred to as Lesvos or Mytilini after its capital, Lesbos is the third largest Greek Island and situated in the north eastern Aegean Sea. The region is nicknamed the Emerald Island due to its incredibly lush and verdant natural landscape. Flora and fauna including forests made up of olive, pine, chestnut and oak trees cover a large portion of the island. Lesbos is also famous for its mountainous areas, known as Mount Olympus and Mount Lepetymnos, which dominate its central and northern areas. The Petrified Forest

Located on the western side of the island is the ancient and fascinating petrified forest of Lesbos, which has been declared as a national monument. The forest was formed from the petrified remains of plants and trees left behind by a sub-tropical forest that existed on the island 15 to 20 million years ago.

Historic Sites

Lesbos is brimming with intriguing and interesting historic sites, including castles, forts and ancient structures. The island's most famous landmarks are its castles. Mytilini Castle is one of the largest fortresses in the eastern Mediterranean. The castle has been occupied and rebuilt over the centuries by the Romans, Byzantines, Turks and Venetians but is now used for cultural events and performances. Lesbos' structures of historical significance include the smaller Molyvos Castle, the Ancient Theatre in Mytilini, the Yeni Mosque and the Roman Aqueduct at Moria amongst many others.

The hot springs of Lesbos are a perfect place to relax. The aptly named Healing Springs of Lesbos can be found at Polychnitou, Lisvori, Eftalou, Skala Thermi and Karini, offering visitors the chance to sit back and unwind in these incredible natural spas.
