Lorient, France Cruise Port

The quaint seaport of Lorient is situated in the Morbihan department of Brittany in North Western France. The town was badly damaged during the relentless Allied bombing campaigns of the Second World War and therefore few historical monuments and landmarks remain. However, the region does contain several interesting attractions relating to the area's history since the war in the form of intriguing 20th century architecture as well as serene coastal scenery and a collection of splendid parks and gardens. Lorient's modern and bustling town centre contains a large number of excellent shops, restaurants and bistros, reminiscent of some of France's larger cities.

Sightseeing in Lorient

The French town of Lorient is a fascinating place to explore, from the stunning coastal scenery to the bustling city centre, visitors will find an abundance of things to see and do. Contemporary architecture is distributed throughout the city, as it has been painstakingly rebuilt since the devastating damage inflicted during the Second World War. Picturesque and verdant countryside surrounds the town at locations such as Scorff Valley and Blavet Valley alongside a collection of superb beaches at Ploemeur and Larmor Plague. Keroman Submarine Base

During the Second World War, a massive German U-boat base was situated in Lorient. During 1941 and 1942 three colossal concrete shelters were constructed along the Keroman peninsula, to house and protect 30 German submarines. Despite Allied attempts to destroy the facilities during the war, the structure survived and was taken over by the French Navy for its nuclear submarine. Nowadays, the building is a captivating museum and holds a genuine French naval submarine for visitors to see for themselves.

Parks and Gardens

A variety of stunning parks, gardens and green spaces are situated within Lorient. Jules Ferry Park covers one hectare of lush woodland area and hosts a fabulous carnival biannually in August and at Christmas. Other green spaces in the area include Mail Faouëdic, Garden Venzu, Park Wood Castle and Garden Chevassu, all of which contains beautiful scenery and a variety of wonderful wildlife.

Church of Notre Dame de Victoire

Built during the 1950s from reinforced concrete, the Church of Notre Dame de Victoire overlooks Alsace-Lorraine Square and boasts a modern 20th century design. The Church has an extraordinary interior with a series of inscriptions and intricate decoration throughout.

Shopping in Lorient

A range of shopping experiences are on offer across Lorient including a selection of outdoor markets and grocery stores selling a variety of local produce and useful items. Popular shopping areas situated around the region include Halles de Merville, Saint Louis, Place Simone de Beauvior and Avenue Faoëdic. The town also has several speciality and gift stores with a range of gifts, souvenirs and mementos for visitors to purchase.

Eating out in Lorient

A number of fantastic restaurants and cafes are situated within Lorient, serving a variety of classic French and regional dishes as well as a range of international cuisine. Some of the best eateries are located around the Léopol area of town.
