Paranagua, Brazil Cruise Port

Situated at the heart of the state of Parana, the port city of Paranagua has long been considered the gateway to Curitiba, rather than a stand-out destination in itself. This is wholly unfair, as this port manages to showcase a different to Brazilian culture far removed from the fast-paced tourism magnets such as Rio de Janeiro.

The cooler climate in this region, along with the charming pastel coloured buildings in the centre give you more than enough reason to make sure this underrated port is on your radar. The undulating hills that populate the whole region make for a balmier temperature than you might be used to on Brazilian shores, but the weather is still glorious in this part of the world.

Paranagua has always been an important international port, but with the usage of a more modern facility, miles away from the centre of town coming into play, the old seaport has now become a popular harbour, more accustomed to the sight of colourful private sailing yachts and cosy restaurants than commercial liners.

Sightseeing in Paranagua

Archaeology and Ethnology Museum

Recently renovated after over 250 years of service, this spectacular museum occupies what was once the site of a Jesuit school in the centre of Paranagua. Today however, a stroll to the Setor Historico will lead you to a brilliant exhibit featuring artifacts excavated entirely from the local area. For an enriching look into the history of Paranagua, there's nowhere better, as the collection contains fascinating examples of tribal weaponry, clothing, and tools. Although there is plenty to see on a usual day, there are often art exhibits showcasing the best of the local talent on certain dates.

Ihla Do Mel

This 6 mile long park is known as the ‘Honey Island' for a reason. It's the most popular destination on Paranagua's coast, but the relatively low-key atmosphere of the town means you'll never be struggling through hordes of crowds. Criss-crossed by hiking trails, and not open to cars, this is one of the most pristine beaches in the whole of Brazil. Take time out to visit the Enchanted Grotto, which features crystal blue rock pools, and the Lighthouse of the Shells, a striking monument hidden amongst outcrops of sandstone on the south shore.

Parque Nacional De Superagui

The northern shore of Paranagua is home to this 54,000 acre nature complex, which has such a fascinating range of landscapes and wildlife you'll want to explore it all day. A system of coves, saltwater marshes and forested islands weave their way through this huge area. Take a local boat tour if you would enjoy the chance to get up close to colourful parakeets, and endangered alligator and tamarin species.

Shopping in Paranagua

For an authentic Brazilian market atmosphere, head to Mercado do Artesanato, a former flea market which has now been renovated by the city, but thankfully kept all of its rustic charms. The range of products is staggering. From ornate pottery to fresh fruit, the passionate stall vendors sell seemingly everything.

Eating out in Paranagua

For eclectic cuisine in a friendly environment, head to Astral da Ilha. This local favourite serves seafood staples in huge portions, and the friendly atmosphere adds even more to the restaurant's allure.
