Pointe des Galets, Reunion Island Luxury Cruises

Situated in the Indian Ocean, Pointe De Galets nevertheless retains an air of a getaway to the French Coast, complete with classical architecture and delectable cuisine.

The culture upon Reunion Island, where this gem of a port rests, has a multi-cultural heritage which adds fascinating influences to the islands people, architecture and history. Creole, Indian, European and Chinese culture convene on this charming island 500 miles from Madagascar, an utterly unique locale which is sure to surprise and delight at each and every turn.

The tropical splendour of palm trees meets lava fields, in a scenic display that countless brochure pictures could never do justice. The beaches are part of the island's trademark diversity too, with pure white as well as jet black sandy beaches stretching out upon the coastline. Active volcanoes add an adventurous atmosphere to the island, with intrepid hiking tours easily organised from the sun-kissed townships alongside Pointe De Galets – making this secluded paradise even more a priority for your next cruise.

Sightseeing in Pointe Du Galets

St. Denis

This lovely provincial French enclave is the capital of Reunion Island, but you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a Parisian district. The climes are undeniably hotter, but this is a French town at heart. With trendy boutiques, patisseries, delis, and galleries to discover around every corner, you'll want to spend days strolling along its sun-dappled streets.

Behind the polished aesthetic is the diverse architecture that are the hallmarks of its storied past. The domes of religious buildings and intriguing bazaars are nestled between the boulevards, adding even more sightseeing potential to this one-of-a-kind metropolis.

Piton de le Fournaise

Known as the Peak of the Furnace, this shield volcano lies on the Eastern side of the Island, and luckily for cruisers, a short trip away from the centre of Pointe Du Galets. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with an eruption occurring as recently as 2010. The lava flows of Piton de le Fournaise have often met the sea, with incredible results. Basalt outcrops formed by the cascade of the magma can be seen when you venture outward towards the coast from the centre of the caldera, where some of the sands upon the beaches has been turned a bright green by the volcanic activity. Worth a visit for the panorama alone.

St Gilles les Bains

This azure lagoon might be home to a large resort complex, but that doesn't mean you'll have to go anywhere near the hotels and tourist magnets to enjoy its beauty. White sands (rare on this side of the island), chic nightclubs and a welcoming atmosphere are what make this a fantastic beach spot – not the golf courses. From diving to deep-sea fishing, a host of water activities await those intrepid enough to explore the crystal clear waters.

Shopping in Pointe De Galets

Grand Marche, near the centre of St. Denis offers a brilliant range of fashion items and handicrafts, most of which are locally made to an outstanding standard.

Eating out in Pointe De Galets

One of the best place to indulge in the local cuisine is Helios, which blends Asian and European flavours to fantastic effect.
