Porto Empedocle, Italy Cruise Port

Poised on the coast of Sicily, Porto Empedocle is a town blessed with a close-knit community that mirrors the intimate design of its streets and plazas. Its links to the capital of Agrigento make it a wonderful place from which to begin a journey around Sicily's coastline, but you'll more than likely find much more here than your usual gateway port.

The historic centre is marbled with narrow streets that are constantly leading you on to the next surprise. Turn a corner, and you'll find a new cosy café or plaza, lively with the vigour of its tight-knit community. The Via Roma is the heart of the township, and the ideal starting point for an afternoon stroll taking in all this delightful port has to give.

Sightseeing in Porto Empedocle

Tower of Charles V

Walk in any direction toward the main harbour and you're bound to see this tower rising up into the skyline. The tower was originally built for defence, but today its guns are silent, and the white washed walls of the tower shine in the bright light of the afternoon. Head to the interior to get a fantastic look at the balcony which once held the battery of coastal weaponry, as well as an absorbing view of the turquoise waters rolling through the bay.

The Pelagie Islands

These deep sea islands are just a ferry ride away from the harbour of Porto Empedocle, and are a protected marine reserve served diligently by the local authorities. The diversity of the wildlife here is astonishing, with sea turtles, basking sharks and multitudes of shellfish making their homes amongst the rock pools and coves. The islands have had their ecosystems beautifully preserved, and luckily too, as this single archipelago contains some of the greenest land and richest fauna in the whole of Italy.

The Chaos Beach

The name of this beauty spot is misleading in the extreme, especially since it's so serene. A favourite of the locals, this beach has all the typical allure of Mediterranean beaches, but with unusual rocky outcrops adding rarity to the landscape. It's a brilliant idea to head further north from the beach proper, as there are secluded coves and rock faces to be found upon the steeper parts of the shore. It's also somewhat of a hub for water sports, so if your preference is for gliding through the waves rather than gazing at them during a tanning session, you can enjoy a brilliant range of surfing, water skiing and snorkelling activites.

Shopping in Porto Empedocle

Cimino Alta Moda Confezioni is a fashionista's paradise – a long, sun-dappled boulevard filled with luxury boutiques and jewellery stores filled to the brim with unique pieces. It's best to enjoy its grand sophistication in the early evening, as the dusky twilight shades and the cool breezes complement the store fronts perfectly.

Eating out in Porto Empedocle

Trattoria Sapore Di Mare is the finest seafood restaurant in Porto Empedocle, serving up fresh mussels, shrimp and prawns, along with their speciality dish of oysters on the half-shell.
