Praia, Cape Verde

Sun-drenched year round, Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, welcoming hundreds of ships during the summer season. Situated upon the island of Santiago, this port has a rhythm and energy of its own, not to mention an engaging multicultural history that lends a peerless blend of influences to its architecture and people.  Long a trading post for the African nations, Praia has recently come into its own with a modern infrastructure and youthful population that have come to redefine the cityscape.

The beating heart of Praia is its old town, which overlooks the fast-paced fringes of the city upon a lush plateau. The beauty of this historical district is that it is much less tourist-orientated than its counterparts elsewhere, preserving the unique beauty of its churches, government houses, and colonial strongholds. Meanwhile, there is a prestigious pedigree of city beaches to be discovered as you explore the newer locales upon the coast, the sites of music festivals, nightclubs, and gourmet restaurants.

Sightseeing in Praia

Pont d'Agua

If you wanted to see the modern face of African culture with a rare island twist, then Pont d'Agua should be the first place you visit. With modern glass buildings blending with palm trees, this futuristic complex seems to have been dropped from mid-air into the midst of island culture. In an unusual way, the contrast works wonders, with swimming pools, spas and upscale restaurants finding their home amidst the golden sands of the Cape Verde coastline.

Cidade da Ribeira Grande de Santiago

Guarded by the ancient fortress of Fortaleza Real de Sao Felipe, this is the former capital of the isle of Santiago, which was once the vibrant trading hub of Cape Verde during the colonial rule of the Portuguese. It's still worth a visit however, as the romantic facades of the white washed houses, the panoramic view of the shoreline, and the centuries-old churches of Rua Banana.

Tarrafal

The north of Santiago is home to several pristine beaches, but the most spectacular is easily Tarrafal. This is a tranquil bay protected from the wind by sheer, green flecked cliff faces on either side, making it an ideal place for snorkelling and swimming.

The beach is rarely crowded, so it's always a breeze to enjoy its subtle charms and familial local community. The bay of Tarrafal is also home to Sunday markets and old baroque churches, adding even more to the quaint delights of this serene corner of the world.

Shopping in Praia

Cape Verde is full of talented craftsmen, so the markets are good place to start if you're looking for unusual curios and rare items. Elsewhere, many shopping streets in Santiago cater for jewellery, clothing and antique aficionados.

Eating out in Praia

For Asian fusion cuisine blended with the island flavours of Cape Verde, make sure to enjoy a visit to the Titi Sushi Lounge, which serves up (you guessed it) delectable sushi of the most cultivated varieties, Shrimp, crab meat and the tastiest tuna all make an appearance upon the delectable menu.
