Cruises: 3300

Qaqortoq, Greenland Cruises

Qaqortoq is South Greenland's largest town, and with 3,000 inhabitants to its name, cruisers travelling through this idyllic coastal city are sure to be enraptured by its intimate atmosphere and lack of bilious commercial interest. The focus here is on nature, and plenty of it. The pleasant town centre is beautifully contrasted with the surrounding countryside, which is a breath-taking blend of verdant green hills, majestic icy rivers, and amazing mountain peaks.

The region is known not just for its stunning landscape, but also for the abundance of historical sites and archaeological wonders. The township itself is blessed with a rich culture, containing beautiful colonial buildings, some of which date back as far as 1775. As well as hiking trails that lead to pristine cliff tops ruins that have stood since the island was ruled by Vikings, cruisers can also get a look at such marvels as ancient arrowheads on their travels.

Sightseeing in Qaqortoq

Northern Lights

These spellbinding natural displays of awe-inspiring colours have been revered for decades as one of the finest sights a traveller can hope to see. There are numerous guide companies in Qaqortoq who operate year-round tours, enabling cruisers to get the rare opportunity to observe this spectacular phenomenon in person. From Qaqortoq, cruisers are likely to head into the network of fjords and glaciers that surround the township. Experienced guides will accompany you through these natural wonders, before making camp in a perfect spot in which to observe the vivid lightshow of the Aurora Borealis.

Hvalsey Church

Just a walk away from the centre of Qaqortoq, this stunning historical site is one of the most well-preserved ancient Christian churches to be found on any continent. The foundations of this amazing piece of cultural history have stood for centuries, and to this day are beautifully preserved by local conservation groups. This is one of the last vestiges of the rule of the original Norse settlers, and as such is a splendid historical feature which any cruiser is sure to be intrigued by.

Hot Springs

If you are looking for a truly unique experience further afield, make sure to charter a ferry and sail to the tiny deserted island of Uunartoq, which rests between the isles of Alluitsup Paa and Nanoraltik. Here, cruisers will find an awe-inspiring natural wonder in the form of three stone-ringed pools which contain the only springs in Greenland which are perfect for bathing. Surrounded by towering peaks, and floating icebergs, this brilliant nature spot is not to be missed.

Shopping in Qaqortoq

The authenticity of this intimate township can be seen especially within the wares which are sold by its local craftsmen. The pieces on offer here are far removed from the typical tourist fare, with items such as shark tooth necklaces, precious stones mined from the surrounding mountains, and handmade artworks all abundant within the countless workshops.

Eating out in Qaqortoq

A key part of the cuisine culture in Greenland is the quality meat, which comes plentifully and cheaply. Many of the eateries in Qaqortoq offer a delicious collection of dishes which offer everything from salmon to reindeer, and all prepared according to traditional recipes. A unique dining experience if there ever was one.
