Polar Regions Ports

Longyearbyen, Svalbard

If you have an idea in mind of polar bears, blue ocean ice and stark tundra, far in the frozen north, then Svalbard could be your perfect cruise destination. Sitting halfway between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard’s major port town of Longyearbyen features on many Arctic cruise itineraries.

Longyearbyen is marked out by its wild rugged beauty; a place of snowy mountain ranges, clear rivers and dramatic icy fjords. The port is a haven for thrillseekers, with activities like dog sledding and snow mobile safaris available in spectacular Arctic surroundings.

Nuuk, Greenland

Take one look at Nuuk and you may not want to leave. This is the idyllic tundra town, marked out by brightly coloured wooden houses nestled in a dramatic rocky landscape. Its clear cold skies also make this a great place to see the Northern Lights in all their glory, if you’re lucky enough to catch the display during your cruise.

Greenland’s capital offers is surrounded by some magnificent natural landscape, with hiking trails being a popular attraction among its visitors. Whale watching boat tours are another big draw for visitors, along with the city’s Art Museum and National Museum which trace Greenland’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Pleneau Island, Antarctica

Luxury cruises to Antarctica tend to set sail from Argentina to the Antarctic Peninsula, taking you to destinations like Port Lockroy and Neko Harbour. Perhaps the most beautiful destination though is Pleneau Island, where bright white ice formations jut out from the freezing waters and glow blue where they reflect the sea.

This is the perfect territory for wildlife spotting, where whales glide by in the deep, and leopard seals rest on the ice or slip into the water to hunt penguins while they fish. Here black crags stand in stark contrast to the bright white snow around them, and clear cold skies reflect in dark cold waters – and you can watch it all from the comfort of your luxury ship.
