Agioi Pantes is a tiny and secluded islet located off the shore of Agios Nikolaos. Definitely worth visiting whilst in Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni. This small lake connects to the town's harbour and to the sea. It is surrounded in local folklore and according to legend, the goddess Athena would bathe in it. Locals also claim that the lake is bottomless, due to its abnormal depth to width ratio; however, it has been discovered to be 64m deep and 134m wide.
The sleepy coastal town of Agios Nikolaos also boasts an impressive archaeology museum, which draws large number of locals and tourists every year. The museum contains many intriguing and ancient archaeological artefacts which are sure to fascinate visitors. On Wednesday mornings locally produced fruit, vegetables, honey and other produce are sold at the town market and tourists are always welcome to make purchases. Elsewhere, the town is scattered with small shops, stalls and markets selling all kinds of items and souvenirs such as home made cups, plates, crockery, woven fabrics, clothes and household decor. Tourists are sure to find the perfect memento of their stay in Crete in one of the quirky local shops and markets.
There is a great range of cafes and restaurants dotted throughout Agios Nikolaos, ranging from smaller and less expensive eateries to extravagant larger restaurants. For authentic Mediterranean cuisine, try visiting restaurants such as ‘Barko', ‘Piato', ‘Embassy' and the locally popular ‘9 Muses' restaurant.
