Sight-seeing in Ancona

The city of Ancona can be split into two distinct areas, the historic part of town within Monte Guasco and the modern developments found along the coastline. Ancona Cathedral

Original constructed during the 13th century, the Ancona Cathedral’s architecture contains aspects of Roman, Greek and Byzantine influence, which reveals its rich history and heritage throughout the ages. The Cathedral sits upon the Guasco hill, overlooking the city of Ancona and offers breath-taking views out over the city’s Adriatic coastline alongside fabulous interior architecture.

Arch of Trajan

The 18 metre tall marble Arch of Trajan is one of the most notable Roman monuments in the region and was constructed during the 2nd century. The archway itself is around 3 metres wide and features impressive Corinthian pillars inscribed with ancient Roman markings.

Conero Regional Park

Known locally as Parco del Conero, the Conero Regional Park encompasses a large portion of the city of Ancona. The park has a sprawling landscape of verdant forests, craggy cliff faces and serene beaches only accessible by boat. The park is also home to a selection of historic monuments including an ancient watchtower, a Napoleonic fortress and the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo. Visitors to Coreno Regional Park will be astounded by the area’s incredible scenery and rich heritage.

Shopping in Ancona

Ancona’s main shopping areas can be found at Piazza Roma, Piazza Erbe, Piazza del Plebiscito, Corso Mazzini, Corso Garibaldi and Corso Stamira, where a fantastic range of shops are located, selling a variety of specialty items and souvenirs such as jewellery, clothes, antiques and authentic Italian arts and crafts. Corso Mazzini also holds a daily market where customers can purchase a range of traditional produce including homemade pasta and Fossa cheese.

Eating Out in Ancona

The city boasts an abundance of excellent local restaurants serving popular seafood based dishes alongside a range of international cuisine. Traditional local food that visitors should try in order to get an authentic taste of Ancona includes Ascolana style stuffed olives, brodetto all’Anconetana and stocafisso all’Anconetana.
