Antofagasta, Chile Luxury Cruises

Situated on the Pacific Coast of Northern Chile is the fabulous port city of Antofagasta. As an old mining region of Chile, the city is steeped in fascinating history and heritage, with an array of historic structures and monuments located throughout the city. Antofagasta’s desert climate and ubiquitously cloudless sky make it the perfect location for telescopes to observe the night sky, which is why many observatories are distributed across the region. The city’s marvellous coastal scenery is breath-taking and stunning views can be found all over the Pacific coastline. This colourful city boasts an array of wonderful attractions and beauty spots, adding to the region's uniquely charming character.

Sightseeing in Antofagasta

Antofagasta boasts a collection of tremendous natural and man-made attractions located across the city and along the Pacific coastline. A coastal walk is a brilliant way to see spectacular ocean scenery and beautiful sunsets, as well as wild sea lions, pelicans and other birds in the fisherman’s harbour feeding on the fish waste that has been disposed of by local fishermen. Towards the centre of town, visitors can take a stroll through the Plaza Colon, a 19th century square developed by the British, which contains a series of fountains, flora and fauna as well as a miniature replica of London’s Big Ben clock tower. Other sight-seeing and excursion possibilities include:

Monumento Natural la Portada

Located around 15 miles north of Antofagasta is the spectacular Monumento Natural la Portada, a humungous arched rock formation situated off the Pacific coastline. This rocky monument has been eroded into an arch by the mighty Pacific Ocean and is one of the region’s most popular natural landmarks. This incredible natural monument has been millions of years in the making and the local population are particularly proud of its majestic aura.

Barrio Historico

This 19th century neighbourhood is home to an assortment of Georgian and Victorian buildings, built by British settlers. The area also contains a fascinating museum alongside a range of historic and colourful architecture.

Museo Regional de Antofagasta

The Regional Museum of Antofagasta houses a collection of around 9000 fabulous artefacts from Chile’s natural and cultural history. Fascinating displays include ancient toys, a deformed human skull and a selection of items and photographs from Chile’s illustrious history within the mining industry.

Shopping in Antofagasta

The city contains several large department stores where visitors and locals can go to buy a range of different items including clothes and fashion garments, toys and games, books, films, electronics and sports gear. Speciality stores and marketplaces are also distributed across Antofagasta, selling a variety of art, crafts and local produce for tourists to purchase as gifts and souvenirs.

Eating out in Antofagasta

Visitors will find a range of international cuisine available in restaurants throughout the city of Antofagasta serving Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek and Mexican cuisine amongst many other familiar dishes. Several fast food outlets are also located across town, allowing tourists and locals to pick up a quick and easy meal at an affordable price.
