Bahia Post Office (Floreana)
Floreana Island is a beautiful destination in the Galapagos with numerous places of interest to explore. If your ship travels to the northernmost point, named Punta Cormorant after the HMS Cormorant that sailed in the 19th Century, you’ll be able to visit a lagoon that is a nesting place for flamingos, and see them skim the waters to catch shrimp. It’s also home to a white sand beach, one of the few in the Galapagos, where you can unwind in total peace.
Yet one of the highlights of the island is the Bahia Post Office. This is a truly unique landmark – a place where travellers can leave mail that is unstamped, to be delivered by other visiting tourists who live in the destination town or city when they return home. It carries on a tradition of a post box used by ships on multi-year voyages from the 19th Century. Be sure to check to see if there’s anything left for your home city, and leave your own postcard or letter to someone in the hope that another traveller will one day deliver it for you.
Floreana Island is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -6).
