Bonifacio, Corsica
The idyllic town of Bonifacio looks out over the Mediterranean Sea from the southern tip of the beautiful French island of Corsica. Perched upon the island’s dramatic limestone cliffs, the town boasts spectacular coastal scenery as well as a rich history and heritage, dating back to the region’s Roman occupation before it was officially established by the Tuscans in 828. Exquisite beaches, imposing cliff faces and verdant forests provide the backdrop for Bonifacio’s magnificent natural landscape whilst ancient structures still stand strong in the region’s charming old town. The commune is a great place from which to explore the island of Corsica and is also just a short boat ride away from neighbouring Sardinia.
Sightseeing in Bonifacio
Taking a stroll through the old town of Bonifacio and across the craggy cliffs along the coastline is a great way to appreciate the area’s stunning natural beauty and intriguing heritage. Travelling north along the coastline, visitors will also discover a string of superb sandy beaches, many of which are fantastic places for thrill-seeking travellers to try out a range of water sports or simply relax on a sun lounger. The centre of town is home to a collection of fabulous historic buildings and impressive structures balanced upon the cliffs of southern Corsica.
The Citadel
Many of Bonifacio’s historic buildings reside within the ancient walls of the citadel, which make it a perfect location to wander through and discover more about the towns fascinating heritage. Walking up from the marina along the montée du Rostello and montée St-Roch, visitors will find the citadel’s astonishing 16th century drawbridge and gateway, from which they can explore the areas enchanting streets and see the historical aqueducts, which were created to collect water for the public cistern situated across from Eglise Sainte Marie Majuere.
Eglise Sainte Marie Majeure
The Eglise Sainte Marie Majeure is a wonderfully preserved 12th century church, towering above the old citadel of Bonifacio. The building is one of the region’s most significant examples of historic architecture and was recognised as a historic monument in 1982.
Gouvernail de la Corse
Situated to the west of the peninsula on which Bonifacio sits is the Gouvernail de la Corse, a striking rock formation reminiscent of the rudder on a ship. The attraction can be reached via an underground passageway, dug out by hand during the Second World War.

Bonifacio has an excellent range of sophisticated boutiques and quirky gift shops, many of which can be found within the picturesque old town. A collection of both expensive and affordable shops are situated across the historic old town, selling various items including locally produced jewellery and splendid souvenirs and mementos of a stay Bonifacio.

The quaint cafes and restaurants situated along the coast of Bonifacio offer diners fabulous sea views as well as delicious local and international cuisine. As a port town, seafood is a local favourite and is readily available in eateries across the region, alongside a range of other authentic Corsican cuisine.
