Lush green hills surround Corner Brook in Canada, a warm and laid-back fishing port nestled in the inlet of a natural harbour on Newfoundland's western coast. Vast forests and rocky outcrops dominate the landscape here, making a beautiful backdrop for your time in the town – or exciting adventures if you'd prefer to explore the hills, shores and fjords for yourself.
Visitors to Corner Brook can follow in the footsteps of Captain James Cook with a tour of the surrounding countryside; there's no shortage of scenic peaks here from which to enjoy the vistas over the bay. If however you'd prefer more moderate and much less vertical proceedings on your next shore excursion, there's plenty to see in the town itself too:
Gros Morne National Park
Take all the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands or the English Lake District and multiply it, and you'll come close to the spectacular scenery of Gros Morne National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, visitors here can hike for miles across unspoiled terrain, exploring fjords carved out by ancient glaciers; or relax by the sea in one of the area's charming fishing villages.
Corner Brook Museum
A trip to Corner Brook's modestly-sized museum can reward you with a comprehensive knowledge of the area's people and natural history. Here you can take a guided tour through Corner Brook's extensive archives, which include everything from historic maps, sketches and decorative pieces to photos and recordings of life around the town. The museum charts the military and native histories of the region too, and the objects amongst its collections include furniture, needlework, clothing and ceramics – all lovingly collected and tended by individuals dedicated to documenting the culture of Newfoundland.
Captain Cook Monument and Trail
Enjoy some outstanding vistas of Corner Brook town and the Bay of Islands beyond from Crow's Hill, where a statue of Captain James Cook shares the view. Here you'll find charts and plaques detailing Cook's exploration of the area, and you may have the option to continue the trail with a tour of the bay – and a stop in the jaw-dropping mountain scenery of Lark Harbour.
There's plenty of choice in Corner Brook when it comes to clothes shopping, and a massive range of gift shops and jewellers if you're looking for the perfect souvenir to remember your time here. Arts and crafts are big business here too, and you can browse galleries and furnishing stores too if you're looking for something to make the walls happy back home.
Corner Brook brims with off-the-wall cafes and restaurants, many of which serve inventive twists on classic seafood dishes. Try one of the local bistros for a relaxing place to dine on fresh-caught lobster, or take a seat in a local café for a cup of delicious fresh-ground coffee – unless that gorgeous smell has already pulled you in by the nose despite yourself.
