The Greek island of Delos is situated towards the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, close to Mykonos, within the Aegean Sea. The island is one of Greece’s most significant archaeological and mythological sites; with traces of human inhabitants dating back as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Although the majority of the island is covered with fascinating archaeological sites, Delos also boasts magnificent beaches and coastline on which to relax and soak up the sun. The island of Delos was one of ancient Greece’s most sacred locations, believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Many of Delos’ revered ancient monuments have been incredibly well preserved and offer an insight into the island’s illustrious and ancient history and heritage.

Sightseeing in Delos

The island of Delos is a testament to the ancient Greek civilisation, boasting a plethora of historic landmarks and monuments. An excellent excursion possibility, which allows tourists to escape the crowds, is to climb the nearby Mount Kynthos, which offers panoramic views of Delos and its neighbouring islands from the summit. Alternatively, visitors can get up close to the various monuments situated across the island by participating in guided tours or simply strolling around the island by themselves. Ancient Delos is home to an impressive array of triumphant archaeological finds.

The Museum of Delos

The Museum of Delos houses sculptures and other artwork from a variety a fascinating historic eras. Artefacts from the Roman, Archaic, Hellenistic and Classical period can be observed in the museum, which offers free entry for visitors, allowing them to discover more about the regions rich heritage.

Ancient Delos

The island of Delos contains a selection of the most interesting and well preserved archaeological finds in the world and is open to the public all year round. Prominent ancient landmarks include the three temples of Apollo, the remains of the Altar of Dionysos and the renowned Lion Terrace, which is believed to have been a gift from the Naxians. Structures such as Cleopatra’s House, so called due to the statues of Cleopatra found inside, and the Theatre, which has a capacity of around 5000 spectators, date back as far as the 3rd century BC. Other historic sites include the House of Dionysos, the House of the Dolphins and the House of the Masks, each containing a display of tremendous mosaics, as well as a selection of ancient temples; the Temple of the Delians, the Temple of the Lions and the Doric Temple of Isis, built upon a hill overlooking the island. Also, the Delos Synagogue is the oldest of its kind in the world. One of Delos’ most popular attractions however is the Sacred Lake, which according to legend was the birthplace of Apollo, the Greek god of light.

Shopping in Delos

Due to the fact that Delos is uninhabited there are very few shops on the island. Visitors may however find small stalls around the attraction selling themed souvenirs.

Eating out in Delos

The Sanctuary of Apollo has a tourist information centre which contains a restaurant and bar serving tasty familiar meals and local Greek cuisine.
