Situated in the south eastern Pacific Ocean, the remote and beautiful Easter Island is famous for being one of the world’s most secluded and magical locations. The island is well known across the globe for its incredible history and heritage as well as the mystery surrounding the region’s most significant landmarks, known as the moai; a series of colossal heads, carved from stone and facing out to sea. The island also has a spectacular natural landscape, with magnificent volcanic craters, intriguing coves, white sandy beaches and stunning coastline. The amazing sights and sounds of the isolated Easter Island have fascinated and delighted travellers for centuries.
Aside from Easter Island’s extraordinary sight-seeing opportunities, the island boasts a range of exciting excursions and activities. Guided tours are great way to see the island easily and affordably. Easter Island’s many historical monuments are heavily protected by local laws, so a guided tour is a good way to see them with the assurance that no rules will be broken. Water sports such as snorkelling and scuba diving are very popular and several diving centres can be found across the island, escorting amateur divers to the best underwater locations around the coast.
The ancient and mysterious moai statues, scattered along the coastline of Easter Island, have captured the imagination of travellers ever since their discovery. A grand total of 887 separate moai statues can found all over the island and are believed to have been carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500 AD. The major mystery surrounding these astounding monuments is how they were moved into place by the ancient people of Easter Island, as the largest weighs around 82 tons and stands 10 metres tall. The moai are very sacred to the native people of Easter Island, so it is important for travellers to respect them as much as possible.
Rano Kau and Rano Raraku
Rano Kau and Rano Raraku are two of the island’s imposing volcanic craters, where it is said that the moai statues were carved. Visitors to Rano Raraku can observe the different stages involved in carving the ancient statues for themselves within this impressive volcanic quarry.
Along Easter Island’s stunning coastline visitors will find two pristine white, sandy beaches. On the north side of the island, Anakena beach is an ideal surfing destination and Ovahe beach is a secluded paradise, which makes it the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun.
All of Easter Island’s shops and stalls are located on the main street of the island’s only town, Hanga Roa, apart from some small souvenir stalls situated around the archaeological attractions. Visitors can pick up a range of souvenirs and mementos from these stalls, including arts and crafts produced by the native people.
The majority of the restaurants on Easter Island are situated in the centre of Hanga Roa and offer a variety of local seafood including lobster, octopus and tuna. The island also has several small supermarkets where tourist can pick up a variety of snacks and quick meals.
