The city of Lautoka is the second largest district of Fiji, situated on the north western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest and most populated island. The area is a great place from which to explore this exotic Fijian destination, as it is located adjacent to the vibrant town of Nadi and on the opposite coast to the nation’s capital city and main seaport, Suwa. Lautoka has earned its nickname ‘Sugar City’ through its many years of sugar cane cultivation, which alongside tourism is one the region’s main sources of commerce. The verdant and exotic island of Viti Levu is brimming with fascinating attractions and sightseeing opportunities distributed across a beautiful natural landscape divided by a majestic mountain range, covered with lush flora and fauna. Lautoka is an excellent gateway to Fiji, boasting a plethora of exciting excursion possibilities and awe-inspiring scenery.
Although Lautoka boasts a collection of wonderful attractions, it is also a fantastic destination from which to explore the rest of Fiji’s main Viti Levu Island. Travel south from the city to the splendid town of Nadi, where tourists can visit and appreciate the stunning Garden of the Sleeping Giant, the historic Hindu Temple or relax on the area’s multiple sandy beaches. Visitors can also journey across the island to the south east coast, where Suwa, Fiji’s capital and main port is located. However, guests who choose to discover the city of Lautoka during their stay in Fiji have a choice of several wonderful sightseeing opportunities.
The Sugar Mill
Lautoka’s reputation as a district of sugar production is confirmed by the impressive Lautoka Sugar Mill. Opened in 1903, the sugar mill is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is the region’s biggest employer of local people by far. Visitor can arrange a tour of the facilities with friendly local guides to learn more about the area’s long history in the sugar cane industry.
The Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens in Lautoka contain an abundance of stunning tropical plant species, most of which are labelled to help amateur horticulturalists identify them easily. This colourful attraction also has a fun-filled children’s play area situated opposite to it, to keep kid’s thoroughly entertained.
Hare Krishna Temple
Lautoka’s Hare Krishna Temple, otherwise known as the Sri Sri Krishna Kaliya temple, was opened in 1977 and is a friendly local building where tourists can gain further insight into the region’s rich and intriguing culture as well as meet and speak to some of the local people.
The streets of downtown Lautoka are lined with superb shops, stalls and a bustling marketplaces, where visitors can pick up a range of items from gifts and souvenirs, such as local arts and crafts, to general amenities and provisions.
A variety of fabulous restaurants and cafes are located in the more built-up areas of the city. Whilst most of the eateries serve a mix of popular international cuisine, visitors will find that many of the menus also include local favourites and delicacies from across the islands of Fiji.
