Liverpool Port
Overview
Often recognised as one of England’s most vibrant cities, Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture in 2008. Music, art and a thriving nightlife are all to be enjoyed, and the cultures of all that live in the city combine to create a diverse and interesting environment. From Europe’s oldest Chinatown to music venues that helped to launch The Beatles, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Liverpool.
Sightseeing in Liverpool
With time to spend in Liverpool, you’ll be able to take in the sights and sounds of the city. The city’s best attractions are all located within easy walking distance of the port, though a tour bus offers a more relaxing way to see some of the most significant buildings whilst learning about Liverpool’s history. With time to spare, there are attractions to suit every interest.
The Merseyside Maritime Museum
Anyone with an interest in boats and life at seas will appreciate this museum. You’ll learn about the city’s maritime past, and view fascinating exhibits showicasing various passenger liners. See elegant historic cruise ships compared to the feature-packed luxury vessels used today.
Williamson’s Tunnels
As you walk around Liverpool, you’re standing above a vast underground network of tunnels. Constructed in the early 19th century, these are still open to explore today. It’s thought that tobacco merchant Joseph Williamson had these tunnels built for no other reason than to provide continued employment to many of Liverpool’s residents who would otherwise go poor and hungry. If you have time, take a walk through the tunnels and consider how much work was required to create them.
The Beatles Story
Situated by Albert Dock, this attraction includes an audio tour that gives an insight into the lives of all four members of The Beatles. Learn how they rose to fame from working class backgrounds, and find out about The Cavern – a venue that you can also visit during your time in Liverpool.
Shopping in Liverpool
Shops in Liverpool are varied, interesting and often unique, from the luxury and designer stores at the Liverpool ONE shopping centre to the city’s many music shops selling instruments, memorabilia and vinyl records. Visit the MetQuarter to purchase designer fashions, or to stop for a coffee, before continuing your search for boutique fashion stores at the Cavern Walks.
You might also want to shop at Grand Central, where you’ll find a wide range of shops and stalls selling craft items, alternative fashions and souvenirs that reflect the vibrant personality of those living in the city. Alternatively, try the Bluecoat area for designer homewares and contemporary furnishings and accessories.
Eating Out in Liverpool
Liverpool’s varied culture ensures that you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding what to eat. The restaurants of Chinatown serve authentic Chinese foods alongside more modern adaptations influenced by other cuisines, whilst pizza restaurants and more upmarket Italian restaurants offer pasta and pizza dishes and include Jamie’s Italian owned by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
The Red Hot World Buffet is always well stocked, with foods from various countries, whilst the London Carriage Works is a restaurant with an extensive wine list the likes of which you won’t find anywhere else in the city. From favourite American fast food eateries to harbourside restaurants with al fresco tables, you’ll find everything you want for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
