The city of Derry is an amazing place, full of wonderful attractions including historic landmarks, interesting museums and cultural experiences, guaranteed to occupy and delight the throngs of visitors that are drawn to the city. The region's most famous sightseeing opportunities include:
Londonderry is the only city in Ireland to boast a completely intact city wall, and is one the best examples of this anywhere in Europe. The city walls were constructed between 1613 and 1618 by ‘the honourable Irish Society' to defend the city during the 17th century. At around one mile in length, the walls form a continuous walkway around the centre of town, which is a fantastic place from which to view the city. The original gates to the city, known as the Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate are also still intact, alongside three modern gates that have been added later, named the Magazine Gate, Castle Gate and Magazine Gate. Several impressive historic structures are located within the city walls, including St. Columb's Cathedral, the courthouse and the Apprentice Boy's Memorial Hall.
The Free Derry area of town, between Bogside and the western edge of the city walls, contains a collection of fascinating murals, created by local artists, depicting events from the awful conflict in Northern Ireland. Nearby, several monuments including the Bloody Sunday Memorial, the Free Derry Monument and the Free Derry Museum are located.
Derry has a brilliant collection of fascinating museums situated across the city. Informative and intriguing museums in the area include the Tower Museum, Railway Museum, Harbour Museum, Free Derry Museum, Workhouse Museum, Genealogy Centre, Amelia Earheart Museum, Old Gaol and the People's Gallery.
The majority of Derry's shops and retailers are located in and around the centre of town offering a wide range of products and souvenirs. The main shopping centres in the city are Foyleside, the Richmond Centre and Austins, each providing visitors with a great shopping experience. A local market is also open during the day in Guildhall Square.
Londonderry is home to an array of restaurants and eateries serving a wide range of international cuisine and traditional Irish dishes. Smaller cafes and popular fast food establishments can also be found in locations across the city offering quick, easy and familiar meals.
