Nafplio is well-known for its ancient castles, which have stood in the town for centuries. The view from the castle walls is spectacular, offering a chance to see much of Nafplio and many historic structures within the town. Nafplio's other castle is the Venetian fortress of Bourtzi, which was erected around 1400 by architect Antonio Gambell. To the east of the town, some of Nafplio's ancient fortifications also still remain.
