Ocho Rios, Jamaica Luxury Cruises

Situated in Jamaica, Ocho Rios is also commonly known as Ochi. It’s a popular tourist destination, and included as a shore excursion on many luxury cruises. Beach front bars are the perfect places to sit as you enjoy some time on dry land, with a mountain backdrop and various waterfalls within walking distance.

Ocho Rios isn’t typically considered a luxury destination. The local people earn most of their income by meeting the needs of tourists seeking adventure and natural beauty, though there are some very popular holiday resorts along the coastline.

Sightseeing in Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is Jamaica’s tropical paradise, complete with fast-flowing rivers and lush green forests. Inner tubes and bamboo rafts can be provided for tourists wishing to travel down the White River, and there are companies offering jet ski hire if you’d prefer a powered alternative. The Dunn’s River Falls are an impressive spectacle, but there are various other attractions to fill your time:

Dolphin Cove

This isn’t just one of the best attractions in Ocho Rios; it’s one of the best in Jamaica. Visitors can swim with dolphins, stingrays and sharks in a safe environment, before enjoying a jungle walk where tropical birds and lizards roam free.

James Bond Beach

Perfect for water sports of relaxation, James Bond Beach has white sands and stunning turquoise waters. Many famous singers perform concerts on the beach, and it has a bar and restaurant. The beach is named after the character created by Ian Fleming, who had a home on the island, and was used in the film Dr. No.

Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain

Small enough to appreciate on a shore excursion, Rainforest Adventures is one of the most popular Ocho Rios attractions. As well as a small selection of rides, ranging from a bobsled roller coaster to a long zip wire, it features a hummingbird garden and a butterfly garden and has a pool with a water slide. There’s also a small museum – the Mystic Pavilion – worth exploring during your visit.

Shopping in Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios’ craft markets are the best places to visit on your shore excursion. Stall owners sell traditional Jamaican crafts and decorative items, as well as beautiful pieces of art. For such a small island, Ocho Rios is highly populated with these markets and there are seven main venues for tourists to enjoy.

Jamaican coffee and rum make great souvenirs, and at the Island Village shopping centre you’ll be tempted to distraction by a small on-site museum detailing the history of Jamaica’s musical culture.

Eating out in Ocho Rios

At Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain, the Rainforest Restaurant is a favourite place for tourists to dine. The restaurant is located 700ft from the ground, with exceptional views to enjoy as you sample local delicacies. Meals including poultry, cornmeal and sweet potatoes are favourites in Jamaica, and vegetarian tofu dishes are richly flavoured with spices and sauces.

Favourite meat dishes include jerk chicken and pork, barbecued meats and steamed fish. Dine at The Ruins at the Falls to enjoy tropical garden surroundings, or at Evita’s which is a favourite with celebrities visiting the island. As well as traditional Caribbean dishes, you’ll find that many restaurants serve Italian meals for the less adventurous.
