Port Kelang is the most important port in the whole of Selangor, serving as the gateway to the Klang Valley, the most developed region in the whole of Malaysia and home to the capital, Kuala Lampur.
Although Port Kelang is a hub for travellers, there is not a huge amount on offer in the port itself, but the beauty of this trade hub is its connections- it's incredibly easy to reach both the town of Klang itself and the wider Kelang valley. With this in mind, Port Kelang is a superb placed to visit if you wish to explore the wider region of Selangor.
Kelang is the royal town of Selangor, just 34 miles upriver from the golden pagodas of Kuala Lampur. The town is halved by the river which its shares it name, resting at the western end of the lush Klang Valley.
Although it is relatively small in size, it has a huge amount to offer, in particular, historical sites like the Tugu Keris, a towering silver dagger, and Raja Mahadi Fort, a truly impressive landmark which has survived centuries of conflict. Not only is Klang a great place to discover monuments, but it is a superb place to experience authentic Malaysian culture, from dining to entertainment.
The largest city in Malaysia, and undoubtedly its most thrilling, Kuala Lampur lies at the heart of the Klang Valley, a metropolis of 1.8 million people. Its residential suburbs and brightly lit skyscrapers have come to define the city's skyline over the years, yet it is how it has embraced the modern while preserving its rich history that will truly impress you when you visit.
Golden Pagodas a mile or two away from shopping malls, ancient imperial temples nestled between five star hotels… the fantastic contrast is everywhere you look. Make sure to head out of the city when you get the chance, as some of the most superb natural scenery in Malaysia is just an hour away.
A township situated right at the point where the Selangor River meets the sea, Kuala Selangor is famed for its seafood delicacies and quaint buildings. Ancient fortresses and lush jungles also surround the town though, giving an epic edge to its charming atmosphere. Make sure to look out for the remnants of Dutch colonisation that can still be seen strolling around town, from stone buildings to rusted cannons and battlements.
Although there's no real shopping per se in Port Kelang, you can always head downriver for an incredible range of products. Kuala Lampur is a paradise for shoppers, with multi storey malls and luxury boutiques filling the districts of the city.
Just south of Port Kelang, you can find the districts of Pandamaran and Teluk Gong, both famous for their delectable seafood dishes. For the freshest catches, make sure to get there in the early afternoon, when you can enjoy lunchtime specials in the sunshine.
