Cairo may take the headlines when it comes to ancient Egyptian landmarks but Luxor offers some incredible destinations that easily rival those of the capital. Chief amongst these is the Valley of the Kings, a sprawling necropolis where many pharaohs and their kin are buried. Intricate, elaborate carved tombs are open for you to explore, offering an incredible insight into the ingenious designs of the time. Karnak Temple is on Luxor’s East Bank, and is host to a collection of ruins where temples, chapels and more once stood, all originally built by the Pharaoh Ramses II. Meanwhile the nearby Luxor Temple houses an avenue of Sphinxes, a red granite obelisk and more recently an Islamic mosque.
Once you’ve finished exploring these and many more wonders of the ancient times, you can choose to enjoy a stroll along the sandy beaches of the Red Sea, or opt for some more active pursuits such as snorkelling or water skiing. Alternatively, ride a traditional wooden felucca sailboat on a relaxing cruise down the Nile and soak in the atmosphere and beautiful scenery along the banks.
The currency in Luxor is the Egyptian Pound. Luxor is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
