Located in the Caribbean Sea, St. Thomas is part of the magnificent US Virgin Islands, an unincorporated territory of the United States of America. This tiny and secluded island only covers an area of around 30 km2, but still manages to boast a fantastic range of attractions, activities and excursion possibilities for the many tourists who visit the region looking for sun, fun, sea and sand. Despite its size, St. Thomas is home to two cities named Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook, each containing an array of excellent shops, restaurants and bars to keep locals and tourists entertained throughout the day and into the evening. The island's mix of bustling metropolitan districts and isolated beaches, alongside other areas of natural beauty, creates a wonderfully distinctive ambience, heightened by the friendly local population.
A wide range of exhilarating activities are available to travellers across the island of St. Thomas, including various water sports such as parasailing, snorkelling, kayaking and many others. Scuba diving is also popular along the coast and visitors will find a number of dedicated dive centres, there to help everyone who wishes to go diving, from beginners to advanced divers. Alternatively, travellers can arrange tours of island, charter powerboats from local companies and play golf on the island's brilliant 18-hole golf course. Various other popular attractions on the island include:
A scenic Skyride to the top of paradise point is rewarded with breath taking views out over the harbour, the downtown areas of St. Thomas and the surrounding islands. The summit also boasts a walking trail featuring an array of fascinating flora and fauna, as well as a variety of other entertainment including a new Ferris wheel.
Charlotte Amalie Harbour
The stunning Charlotte Amalie Harbour is a beautiful coastal attraction surrounded by lush hills and attractive scenery. The harbour is usually full of majestic sailing vessels and yachts and is a great place to watch the sunset over the ocean.
The 99 Steps
Constructed during the 18th century by the Danes, the 99 steps were created to help people climb up and down the steep slopes found across the Charlotte Amalie region of St. Thomas. The bricks used for the steps were specially shipped over from Denmark for the sole purpose of building the steps.
St. Thomas is one of the best places in the Caribbean to find a plethora of fabulous shops and markets at which to purchase many affordable items. Dozens of stores can be found in downtown Charlotte Amalie, selling a range of gifts, souvenirs and general amenities. Other excellent shopping districts on the island include Crown Bay, Havensight and Yacht Haven Grande.
A range of great restaurants are situated around the built up areas of the city and along the coastline, serving a variety of international cuisine, familiar western meals and local delicacies. Coconuts are very popular on the island, and can be purchased as snacks in many locations.
