Rooms The rooms combine old-world quality and modern amenities. As well as the gamut of facilities that guests would expect in a five-star hotel room such as a mini-bar, safe, voicemail and international plug sockets, standard features include high-speed wireless internet, an iPod docking station and charger, an internet-enabled television and a work station with a multi-media hub so laptops can be interfaced with the television.
Restaurant The hotel has two restaurants and a seafood and champagne bar. Mint, a grille restaurant is built on three levels. It is bounded by an open-plan show kitchen, a floor-to-ceiling wine wall and full-length glass sliding doors giving uninhibited views of St George's Mall, a pedestrianised artery running from the historic City centre to the Foreshore. It is an all-day informal restaurant. Patrons can opt for the intimacy of the wine-tasting nook, the relaxed atmosphere of the contemporary interior or enjoy the sights and sounds of Cape Town at open-air tables under the trees in the Mall. The mezzanine level can be used for private dining. On the ground floor, the hallowed halls of the Reserve Bank have been restored to house the Bombay Brasserie, an Indian fine-dining restaurant. The elegant decor and authentic Indian cuisine offer a more formal and exotic culinary experience.
Exterior Occupying two historic buildings, it retains the architecture and many meticulously restored interior features of the original South African Reserve Bank and the old BOE building - formerly the Temple Chambers, built in 1890. Seventeen new storeys house suites, guestrooms and residences with magnificent views of the Mother City and the iconic Table Mountain.
Lobby The restored ground floor of the Reserve Bank is now the hotel lobby, with the original marble columns, skylight and anatomically correct lion medallions pressed into the ceilings, remains a triumph to the fastidiousness of James Morris, who designed the building in 1929. There is a bar in the lobby area as well as a cigar lounge.
A marvellous way to explore the Cape Winelands, this trip hits the highlights of this spectacular region. Travelling through verdant valleys and around craggy peaks, the landscape is as much a star as the fine wines and delicious foods that you’ll savour.
This enchanting excursion begins with a tour through historic Stellenbosch, an architectural jewel that serves as the historic heart of the country’s wine region. A gracious blend of 18-century Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings is evident as we drive down Dorp Street, where massive Oaks still shade original water furrows. After a brief tour we enjoy a wine tasting at a fine wine estate in the Stellenbosch area. A second wine tasting will be included (time permitting), before returning to Cape Town.
A fin rises from the water and a shudder goes down your spine. The great white shark has been terrifyingly etched into popular culture as a killer and is considered the most fearsome of marine predators. However, these fascinating creatures are often misunderstood and do not actively seek out human prey. As their numbers decrease, it is becoming a privilege to be able to have a first-hand encounter with the Great White. On this tour you can get face to ragged face with this dreaded apex predator. You don’t need a dive certification or experience as the cage that separates you from the Great White rests only a few metres below the surface of the water. Get ready for the marine encounter of a lifetime! Between the islands of Geyser Rock and Dyer Island is a narrow and shallow channel called Shark Alley – reputed to be the world’s best place for Great White shark cage diving. Due to the resident seal colonies in the area, Shark Alley has been dubbed ‘the supermarket for sharks.’ A short boat ride from Gansbaai, Shark Alley is ideal for those who wish to experience the thrill of getting up close and personal with these giant predators, but who do not possess a dive certification. Please note that sightings of Great White Sharks are not guaranteed.
