WHY WE RECOMMEND Mediterranean CRUISES
From historic capital cities to charming coastal towns dotted across a sun-soaked shoreline, there is so much choice when it comes to picking your perfect Mediterranean cruise itinerary. Take your pick from a host of voyages taking in the Western Mediterranean across Spain, Portugal and the French Riviera, or the Eastern Mediterranean including Italy, Greece and Croatia.
Whichever side of the Mediterranean you decide to explore, from the enchanting east to the legendary west - or even both - you will experience the warm climate, captivating culture and fascinating history for which the region is renowned. A Mediterranean cruise offers the opportunity to explore a different city every day - enjoying famous museums, pavement cafes and stunning scenery as you go. Why not book a Cruise and Stay holiday and extend your stay in a city such as Barcelona?
Mediterranean cruises are most popular during the summer months of June, July and August. The hot weather and warm sea make this the ideal time to visit the coastal town and cities. The spring and autumn are also good times to cruise, particularly if you wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of the summer season.
what's included on-board?
Dynamic Barcelona is all about architecture, from the magnificent medieval buildings of the Gothic Quarter to the Modernist movement typified by the work of Antoni Gaudi. Though his materials were stone and metal, his forms were organic, awash in curves, swirls, and colors. His masterpiece is the amazing Church of the Sagrada Familia, colossal and as yet unfinished, though construction began in 1882. A contemporary contribution to the scene is Ricardo Bofill's post modernist National Theater of Catalonia, an imaginative combination of classical and modern design, with a greenhouse-like lobby.

When you travel to Port-Vendres, be prepared for your imagination to kick into over-drive. Charming red roofs and stone buildings will invite romantic notions about how life once was in this important commercial port. As the key to many ancient routes, Port-Vendres has been welcoming travellers for hundreds of years. The tradition goes back to when the Romans named it Portus Veneris after Venus, the goddess of love, and her temple offered good fortune to mariners.

France's largest and most important fishing port on the Mediterranean, Sete also attracts pleasure craft, and some of the country's America's Cup entrants. The low town is criss-crossed by scenic canals and bridges, and you can observe the activity of the fishing fleet as it ties up in the center of town. Clams, mussels, and oysters are farmed, and it is hardly possible to find fresher fruits of the sea, a treat much enjoyed by visitors. Excursions can be made from Sete to Carcassonne, a perfectly preserved medieval city. With a double row of ramparts and 52 towers, it is everything you expect from a fairy tale castle.

Provence (Marseilles), France
At the same time bustling and picturesque, this oldest of the great French cities has progressed with the times, modernizing constantly. If it looks familiar that might be because it has played a role in many films, French and international, in fact just off the coast looms the foreboding Chateau d’If, where the fictional Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned. Or perhaps you recognize scenes from paintings; the small port of l’Estaque was once a favorite haunt of artists such as Renoir, Cezanne, and Braque. In addition to a lengthy history, today Marseilles is well known in France for its hip-hop music. Who knew?

Saint Tropez, France
Saint-Tropez invokes images of overly tanned bodies in tiny bathing suits, luxury yachts, white sandy beaches, and the over-the-top glitz and glamour of the Côte d’Azur. And while this isn’t too far from reality, we say, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Stroll along the harbor and marvel at the yachts, many of which dwarf the surrounding buildings (and then smile happily to yourself, knowing the Azamara® ship you arrived on is “la pièce de résistance”). Join other jet setters on one of the fabulous beaches, some of which—like Tahiti Beach, made famous by Bridget Bardot—are clothing optional. Ooh, la la!

It is hard to believe that this glamorous haunt of the glitterati was once a sleepy fishing village, but traces of its past do remain. The old harbor of St Pierre still shelters a flotilla of fishing boats alongside the luxurious super yachts, and Le Suquet, the heart of the old town, is still is a cobbled maze of picturesque lanes. It’s a bit of a climb, but earns you the opportunity to engage in one of the most important and longstanding pastimes of the Riviera – people watching from a sidewalk café. If uphill is not your direction of choice, head the other way, for a stroll along Le Croisette, the seaside promenade so fashionable that it is now sometimes referred to as the “catwalk by the sea.”

Nice, Queen of the Riviera, is imbued with the joie de vivre that epitomizes this fabled coastline. Perhaps it is that famous light and color that has long attracted artists, that makes one feel so alive, makes a stroll down the wide seaside Promenade des Anglais so exhilarating. The old town is a warren of meandering lanes edged by tall houses, and small, alluring shops. A treasure trove of archaeological and fine art museums is not to be ignored, nor is the famous flower market, awash in the heady scent and glowing hues of blossoms, and amazing displays of produce.

Located on the northwestern coast of Italy, the ancient maritime city of Genoa is renowned for its architecture, history, music, and art, as well as being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. And with part of its old town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no wonder Genoa is nicknamed la Superba (“the Superb one”) due to its glorious past and outstanding landmarks—including the Palace of St. George built in 1260, the Lanterna (lighthouse) built in 1543, and the historic city walls dating back to the 9th century, of which Genoa has the most and the longest in all of Italy.
