The nearest port to Athens is Piraeus, which is located just seven miles away. As well as being a departure port for cruise ships sailing around the Mediterranean, the Port of Piraeus is also a ferry terminal for ferries sailing to the Greek Islands. Piraeus (also known as Pireas in Greek), is one of the most important cruise ports in the Mediterranean, but almost every cruise passenger stepping off the ship here will head into Athens. If you do decide to explore Piraeus, the Hellenic Maritime Museum and the Archaeological Museum are popular places to visit.
Athens is a hot and busy city, packed with people. At the centre of the city, you’ll find Acropolis – a 150m high rock topped with temples which date back to 400BC. No visit to Athens is complete without a visit to Acropolis and the most famous of the temples is the impressive Parthenon, which can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. Other things to experience in Athens include the Syntagma Square; where you can watch the changing of the guard, the Roman Forum and the Plaka District with its meandering pedestrianised streets lined with restaurants, bars and souvenir shops.
Where can I cruise to from Athens?
A variety of luxury cruises sail out of Athens, from cruise lines such as Azamara Club Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Silversea. Cruises out of Athens are often Island hopping affairs, exploring the islands of the Eastern Mediterranean such as the Greek Islands of Crete, Santorini, Kos and Rhodes, as well as the Maltese Island of Gozo, Italian Island of Sicily and French Island of Corsica. On longer voyages you can sail to Israel, through the Suez Canal and to the United Arab Emirates to visit places such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
