Silversea gets offline digital newspaper content

Some interesting news for people who enjoy Silversea Cruises, and like to keep up to date with the world while they do – it’s been announced that the cruise line has partnered with NewspaperDirect, a renowned distribution service, to provide offline digital newspapers to be downloaded by guests to their personal laptops, phones and tablets during their voyage.

Currently if you want to read through some of the news stories you either have to rely on picking up newspapers in port, or paying to go online and read content – and when you’re at sea, the internet speeds aren’t the greatest so you can be waiting a while.

Now you’ll be able to download one file to have a whole digital edition of a newspaper delivered right to your device, for you to read at your leisure: no need to make sure you’ve got a strong internet connection.

Jason Cohn, the director of IT infrastructure for the cruise line, said “We listened to our guests and set out to create a product that would deliver current news to their personal devices. Launching the PressReader service on Silversea is a testament to both companies’ commitment to offering a convenient, easy-to-use and eco-friendly newspaper service to our guests.”

At the same time the wonderfully-named Igor Smirnoff, the vice president of digital for NewspaperDirect, said “We are pleased to have a partner like Silversea to help us launch the first digital newspaper product of its kind. We believe our solution helps Silversea continue its role as an innovator in the luxury cruise line industry, giving passengers access to full-content global newspapers and magazines delivered in a format they are familiar with – on their own personal tablets or smartphones.”

I think it’s a great idea – anything which brings premium content to cruise passengers without the need to download online, on a slower connection, is extremely useful, and it works well with the streaming services recently announced by the cruise line.
