The whole idea of a luxury cruise is to get out and see the best events and destinations around the world in the most stylish and comfortable way possible. Often these voyages focus on the wonders of history, or the breath-taking beauty of nature. But sometimes there’s a contemporary event that stands out as the kind of experience that you simply must enjoy.
This brings me to the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious racing events ever held. The race began back in 1929, pre-dating the World Championship. It stands out for a number of reasons, leading to a rich history which makes it one of the most exciting events of the sporting calendar.
As of 2013, there have been 71 events held in the 84 years since its inception (various reasons for cancellations include the Second World War, changing rules and the death of Prince Louis II). In terms of records, the driver with the most wins is the incredible Ayrton Senna, while Graham Hill was a British driver who was known as ‘Mr. Monaco’ with his five wins, along with being the only driver to win the Triple Crown (this race, the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hour Race).
Despite being one of the slower races of the Grand Prix calendar, it’s still had a history as one of the most tricky and dangerous tracks in the world. In the past, before barriers were mandatory, cars even ended up in the harbour waters. As such it’s often one of the more exciting; with the famous Nelson Piquet quoted as saying “a win here was worth two anywhere else”.
The setting of Monte Carlo lends an aristocratic air to proceedings, making it a must-see event for anyone who enjoys an experience of true luxury. Sip champagne, dine on the finest local cuisine and watch the finest racers in the world – it’s one of those incredible things that you’ll look back on fondly later in life and be delighted that you were there.
