Exploring Egypt on a River Cruise: An Expert Review of Uniworld's itinerary

Exploring Egypt on a River Cruise: An Expert Review of Uniworld's itinerary

What's it like to explore Egypt on a river cruise? An expert review of Uniworld's itinerary We’ve just returned from what can only be described as one of our most enchanting travel experiences to date! Uniworld’s "Splendors of Egypt and the Nile" tour is an absolute essential for any avid traveller’s wish list.  Explore Egypt Cruise Offers Our journey commenced in Cairo, where we indulged in luxury at the Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza - an exquisite retreat offering stunning views of the Nile. Our pre-cruise excursions introduced us to the rich tapestry of Egypt’s history. We began with a visit to the Grand Citadel, a formidable fortress that once served as the seat of power during the Islamic period. Then we explored the breathtaking Grand Egyptian Museum, home to more than 5,000 artefacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Walking through this museum, which houses the treasures of the boy king who ascended to the throne at just nine years old, was nothing short of magical. Opened to the public on November 1st, we had the unique privilege of being among the first to witness the incredible display showcasing the beautiful gold mask and other artefacts unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922. The tomb's discovery was a monumental moment in Egyptology and has since captivated the imaginations of countless visitors.                                Next, we flew south to join the SS Sphinx, where the organisation was impeccable. As travel agents, we are accustomed to orchestrating our own escapes, but on this trip, being guided effortlessly through all the details was a true luxury. The SS Sphinx truly impressed us, with our accommodations in the Royal Suite feeling fit for royalty. We had the opportunity to explore other cabin types that were also delightfully decorated and extremely comfortable. Be sure to check out our video showcasing the various categories available on our channel.  Dining on board was a real experience, offering an array of dishes inspired by Egyptian flavours, whilst also providing western alternatives like steak and chicken, ensuring everyone’s tastes were satisfied. The chefs surpassed our expectations, attentively catering to guests’ dietary preferences, which epitomised the first-class service we enjoyed throughout the voyage. The crew were amicable and attentive, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.  Now let’s delve into the itinerary - which was simply outstanding! From the beautifully preserved Temple of Dendera to the illuminated Luxor Temple, exclusive only to Uniworld guests at night, every stop offered a glimpse into the ancient world. Standing in the Valley of the Kings while entering Tutankhamun's tomb was one of the trip's highlights. Here, we found ourselves within the very space where Howard Carter excavated the treasures of the young pharaoh - an incredible experience and a thrilling moment.    One of our most cherished moments was taking a hot air balloon ride over Queen Hatshepsut's temple, providing breathtaking views over the Valley of the Kings and the majestic River Nile. Floating in the sky as the sun appeared over the horizon, alongside around 50 other balloons, was a sight we will carry in our hearts forever. Another memorable highlight was afternoon tea at the iconic Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan. This historic hotel, once a favourite of Agatha Christie, served as the inspiration for her famous novel "Death on the Nile." Sitting on the terrace with breathtaking views of the Nile as the sun dipped below the horizon, we reminisced about the hotel’s storied past and the literary genius who had once walked its halls. The passing felucca boats added to the magical ambiance, creating a truly unforgettable experience.  As our journey continued along the Nile, we visited Philae Temple, marvelling at the Aswan High Dam and transiting Esna Lock, each moment etching itself into our memories.                               Our adventure culminated with a return to Cairo and another delightful stay at the Four Seasons. This time, we visited the Pyramids of Saqqara, where we entered a tomb, leading us to the final grand spectacle of the Pyramids of Giza and the impressive Sphinx. The experience of stepping into one of these colossal structures was both exhilarating and humbling, leaving us in awe of the incredible feats accomplished by ancient engineers. Imagining the blood, sweat, and tears involved in such monumental undertakings is overwhelming.  This journey has ranked among the most remarkable experiences we've ever had. Uniworld excelled with outstanding service, superb organisation, a luxurious ship, and, perhaps most importantly, our knowledgeable Egyptologist, Mohamed, who was pivotal in enriching our experience with his insights.  Moreover, we made wonderful friendships with our fellow guests on board, sharing a camaraderie that made the cruise even more special. Assigned to bus number two, we found ourselves among equally enthusiastic travellers, all appreciating the incredible adventure together. We are pleased to now call these fellow adventurers friends for life.                             We want to reassure anyone considering this trip that we felt completely safe and secure throughout the entire journey. Hygiene was paramount, with hotels and the ship utilising mineral water for washing and ice production. None of our group experienced any illnesses or health issues throughout the trip, which was truly fantastic.  We cannot wait to return to Egypt; this adventure was a treasure trove of memories we will hold dear for years to come.  Don’t miss our full video recounting this memorable cruise. We’re also thrilled to announce a hosted departure for 2027, where we will once again visit this extraordinary itinerary alongside some of our subscribers!  If you’re interested in joining The Posh Travel Blog on this phenomenal journey, contact our luxury cruise concierge and ask about The Posh Travel Blog’s hosted Egypt cruise, or connect with them via our social media channels on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube.   Deals for UNIWORLD Boutique River Cruises destinations Egypt & Red Sea

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn Autumn is upon us, and as the air grows crisp and the landscapes begin to evolve, there’s no need to halt your travels. In fact, there are plenty of incredible locations you can enjoy across the globe with a luxury cruise, some even more beautiful for visiting them in these colder months. Vicky Chapman reviews some destination highlights to consider as we welcome a new season. Explore Japan Cruises 1. Japan No autumnal destination inspiration would be complete without a mention of Japan. Whilst renowned for its infamous cherry blossom season, the destination is nothing short of breathtaking during the cooler season, boasting an array of foliage, from fiery reds and golden ginkgo to vivid maple leaves across temples, gardens and mountains. The country is home to an endless number of beautiful temples, from Kyoto to Nara and Mount Takao, which glow amongst the seasonal colours. The pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds make it a far more suitable time for sightseeing, hiking and exploring many of Japan’s spectacular cities like Osaka and Tokyo. You can also enjoy the outdoor hot springs whilst surrounded by the colourful scenery in Hakone, Kusatsu or the Japanese Alps. 2. Canada and New England Famed for its vibrant foliage, this beloved area of North America is simply stunning during the Autumn season. With foggy mornings and cooler temperatures, it’s the perfect hiking weather, where you can marvel at the sea of red, orange and golden leaves flooding acres of land. If you’d like to extend your journey pre- or post-cruise, it’s highly recommended to drive one of the region’s iconic routes, like the Kancamagus Highway, Route 100 and Mohawk Trail. Embrace the festive spirit with apple picking, harvest festivals and pumpkin patches. Explore historic sites and discover the many restored 18th and 19th Century buildings. 3. Alaska A destination that is a common highlight of any frequent cruiser, Alaska is an astonishing part of the world, offering unrivalled views of its towering mountain ranges, pristine waters and fascinating wildlife. Aside from the alpine tundra and boreal forests exploding in deep reds, golds and oranges, the autumnal months are also a particularly active time for resident wildlife. Witness bears and moose in their natural habitats and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon of whale-watching, so you can see these incredible creatures up close. Autumn also means clear, darker nights, which offers explorers a prime opportunity to witness the northern lights while they’re cruising. 4. Mediterranean While beautiful, the Mediterranean summer often involves rocketing temperatures and intensive crowds. Sailing along this part of the world during the autumn allows you to enjoy the iconic landmarks and sites in comfortable weather without the business. Enjoy less queueing and more exploring, whether you’re sailing around the west from Barcelona or Lisbon, or around the east from Athens or Rome (Civitavecchia). The autumnal season is also the perfect time for river cruising, where you’ll still enjoy lots of sunlight but a more serene, peaceful voyage. Explore the heartland of Europe, from the Rhine or the Seine in France or meandering through Vienna and Budapest down the Danube. The best luxury cruise lines for Alaska

The best luxury cruise lines for Alaska

The best luxury cruise lines for Alaska A luxury cruise on a six star ship deserves an incredible destination, and few can rival the natural magnificence and historic wonders of Alaska. This fascinating region is home to breath-taking landscapes dominated by glaciers, a wealth of exciting wildlife species and a rich history spanning Native American heritage and the era of the gold rush. But which luxury cruise ship is the best for you to enjoy such a delightful location? There is no simple answer as each ship is different and tailored to a different kind of passenger. Here we’ll help you understand the options available for a luxury Alaska cruise, so that you can narrow down your choice. Still struggling? Speak to our expert Cruise Concierge on 0808 239 7631. They hold a range of personal experience on some of the world’s most luxurious cruise lines and can recommend the best one to suit you. Which luxury cruise lines sail to Alaska? Alaska is a destination best served by smaller ships, which means a lot of larger mainstream cruise lines offer few sailings in the region. However when it comes to luxury cruise lines, Alaska is the perfect destination, and so every one offers some form of Alaskan cruise. Some of these are dedicated sailings lasting seven- to ten-nights, while some are part of larger itineraries spanning more of the U.S. west coast or sometimes across to the Far East. You’re certainly not short of options when it comes to finding the ideal luxury Alaska cruise for you. Alaska is also a fantastic destination to consider our cruise and stay packages, which we can offer with any cruise line. Extend your voyage with a land tour, incorporating more time in port or even a trip on the famous Rocky Mountaineer train which carves its way through some of the world’s finest scenery. How to choose a cruise line for a luxury Alaska cruise? So how do you go about choosing the cruise line that’s best for you? For that you need to understand what to look for in an Alaska cruise, so that you pick the ship with the facilities which are most suited to your holiday. On an Alaskan cruise, you’ll want to make the most of the awe-inspiring scenery as you sail. This means ensuring you’ve a balcony stateroom or suite. With many luxury cruise lines this will be standard but not for every one, so if you’re booking a ship that has oceanview staterooms, ensure you upgrade to make the most of the views and the crisp air from the comfort of your own balcony. One thing that is sure to happen is that, after a day spent exploring the amazing ports of Alaska, you’re going to need somewhere where you can relax and unwind. And that can vary between different travellers. It may be that you prefer sharing stories with fellow passengers over cocktails in one of the many bars on board.  Perhaps you’re more interested in a massage or specialist treatment in the on-board spa? Or maybe your idea of a relaxing evening is one spent in the theatre, taking in a thrilling live performance? However you best choose to relax, your luxury cruise ship can help you recharge ready for another day of adventure. Also consider the fascinating history to discover in this wonderful part of the world. Some luxury cruise ships offer exceptional, detailed lecture programmes to help you fully understand each port you visit so that your shore excursions are more informed and you can delve deeper into the rich heritage of this region. Finally you’ll want to think about the standard of service on board your ship. While all luxury cruise ships are home to attentive, caring crew, ultra-luxury ships take this to another level. Think about choosing an ultra-luxury cruise line that offers private butler service, so that you can have your shore excursions, spa treatments and dining reservations booked for you, leaving you to focus on soaking in the marvellous scenery and atmosphere of your destination. Our most popular luxury cruise lines for Alaska While every cruise line is different and offers advantages for certain passenger types, there are some lines that are more popular for cruises in Alaska amongst our customers. With outstanding spa facilities, sumptuous dining and a vintage wine collection to choose from, you can be truly pampered as you sail through the majestic Alaskan landscapes. Crystal’s Alaska itineraries vary between seven- and 11-nights. Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife

Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife

Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife From the deep forests of Chhattisgarh to the salt plains of Gujarat, India is an ever-changing landscape. Its wildlife is equally as varied: here is a selection of India’s most remarkable residents and where best to see them. Sloth bear Found across multiple regions, the sloth bear is the most common bear found in India and the state animal of Bihar. With a short-haired muzzle and long curved claws, the sloth bear is equipped with the perfect tools to excavate termites and ants. The bear’s shaggy black coat makes it distinctive from other bear species, and it is easily spotted scaling trees and knocking down honeycombs to enjoy on the ground as a sweet treat. Best place for sightings: Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Bengal tiger The Bengal tiger is as majestic as it is magnificent, a righteous emblem of India. Spotted across central-eastern India, this subspecies is the largest of the tiger family. Habitats include grasslands, rainforests, deciduous forests and mangroves, all of which offer shelter whilst hunting or resting. A particular hot-spot is Madhya Pradesh – sprinkled with temples and palaces, this sacred region has a subtropical climate well-suited for these felines. Best place for sightings: Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Asiatic lion An incredibly rare and breath-taking sight when visiting India, the Asiatic lion is a little different from its African cousin. Distinguishing features include a short, dark mane with prominent ears, as well as a longitudinal fold of skin of skin running along its stomach. These lions can only be found in and around the Gir Forest of Gurjarat, at the most western tip of India. Here, the lions roam freely across 20,000 sq. km of thick, undisturbed forests and savanna plains. Best place for sightings: Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat. Lion-tailed macaque This striking monkey is the smallest of the macaque species and can be found roaming the Western Ghats mountains of southwest India. With a grand mane of hair around its face and tail like a lion, the monkey inhabits evergreen forests and can be found perched high in the forest canopy. The macaque is an Old World monkey and one to see on your journey through India. Best place for sightings: Silent Valley National Park, Kerala. Indian elephant As one of the planet’s largest mammals, the Indian elephant is a powerful animal in both strength and presence. Inhabiting grasslands and evergreen forests, these animals have smaller, rounder ears than African elephants and are typically brown to dark grey. An iconic creature, and often religiously celebrated across India, the species is protected and can be seen on safari in numerous national parks and sanctuaries. Best place for sightings: Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. Snow leopard With its nimble build and thick fur, the snow leopard is perfectly suited to India’s Himalayan mountains, boasting some of the highest peaks in the world. The high altitude and rocky terrain requires breath-taking agility, which this big cat boasts in droves. They are extremely rare, and you will be lucky to spot one prowling through the Himalayan valleys. Best place for sightings: Hemis National Park, Ladakh. Common kingfisher Along the Western Ghats of southern India and up to the central lakes, kingfishers can be seen flitting from branch to branch in search for food. The blue plumage and ultramarine feathers of the common kingfisher in particular stand out among the deep greens and murky browns of the subtropical wetlands it inhabits. India plays host to around 12 species of kingfisher, each as bright and colourful as the next. Best place for sightings: Thol Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat. Rather than the yellow brick road, follow India’s Golden Triangle and beyond to see the spectacular wildlife of this south Asian subcontinent. Have you seen any of these animals during a trip to India? Have we missed your favourite off our list? Let us know using the comment box below.

Our experience on board Azamara Quest

Our experience on board Azamara Quest

Our experience on board Azamara Quest What is it like to sail on board Azamara Quest? Discover life on board this incredible ship first-hand from our luxury cruise expert Shirley, who sailed on a stunning itinerary from Nice to Rome. Shirley's experience on board Azamara Quest   I've recently returned from an incredible trip aboard Azamara Cruises' stunning ship, Azamara Quest, and wanted to give you an insight into what she has to offer, as well as share some of my highlights from my Mediterranean sailing. I hadn't sailed with Azamara prior to this trip and it's safe to say this sailing exceeded every expectation I had! Discover all Azamara Quest sailings   Cruising with Azamara   Offering a deluxe experience, Azamara is the perfect choice if you're looking for ultimate indulgence as you explore locations across the globe. During your time on board, you’ll experience fine cuisine and destination delights with plenty of overnight stays in off-the-beaten-path ports of call. Plus, with a guest capacity of just 800, you can expect to visit ports that larger ships can't reach and enjoy attentive service like no other. On Board Azamara Quest   Stepping aboard Azamara Quest, my colleague Elizabeth and I were met by warm, welcoming staff and clean, tasteful décor adorned with plenty of artwork and sculptures. We stayed in an Ocean View Stateroom, which was very well laid out with plenty of wardrobe space, a fabulous vanity area and a mini fridge. Outside of our stateroom, the onboard ambience was very relaxed and friendly. There were always plenty of sun loungers available around the pool and multiple areas to unwind with a cocktail or a coffee. There is a fantastic variety of dining venues to suit the different times of day. On arrival, we enjoyed a lighter lunch with panoramic views of Nice's picturesque port at Windows Café and on two of the evenings, we dined at Discoveries Restaurant, which offered a diverse selection of dishes each day from escargot to lobster to pad thai. My dining highlight has to be Aqualina, a stunning Italian restaurant with outstanding service. The Dover sole is a must-try; it was brought to the table whole, and we watched as the waiter skilfully removed the bones and skin before serving it all with a few sumptuous sides, all ready to eat. Destination Discovery   One thing that stands out about Azamara is that their ships are smaller than many other cruise lines, which allows you to dock in hidden gems and get closer to your destination. In Nice, we were docked within walking distance from all the shops, the beach, restaurants and bars, where we stopped to experience the local cuisine and beverages while looking out at the ocean and the palm tree promenade. We also visited Corsica's beautiful port, which is so colourful and scenic, with something new to admire at every turn. It was here that we went on an excursion up to the mountains to taste some food and wine, which was excellent! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us some insightful information about Corsica. There is a fascinating contrast between snow-covered mountains and sun-soaked coastline, so you can go skiing, then drive an hour and a half in the other direction and find yourself at the beach! Overall, we had the most fabulous time and wouldn't hesitate to sail with Azamara in the future. If you have any questions about sailing with Azamara Cruises or would like to know more about what offers are available, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We provide personalised service, alongside our first-hand experiences and offers you won't find elsewhere. Simply call our Cruise Concierge today on 0808 163 9421. Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five Holding the title of the coldest place on Earth (reaching -92 degrees on a clear winter night!), it is a wonder that life continues to thrive in the southern polar regions. Antarctica is home to some of the most iconic animals on the planet, many of which we would love to see swimming, hunting or waddling through the white plains. Embarking on an expedition cruise is one of the best ways to to see some of these fantastic creatures up-close, but which animals should top your list? Forget Africa – here is Antarctica’s very own Big Five. Chinstrap penguin The second most popular species of penguin in the Antarctic region, Chinstrap penguins are named for the black band markings under their head. Typically living on hillside slopes and rocky terrain, colonies can reach up to 100,000 pairs on some islands. They make nests using stones of different sizes, with both parents tending to their young once born, feeding them on a diet of crustaceans. Elephant seal Elephant seals are the largest of their species which live in this southern continent, growing up to six feet in length and weighing up to four tons. While cruising past the ice caps, you may hear these animals before you see them, as the males defend their territory. Found north of the pack-ice zone, these seals breed in dense colonies on the beaches. They are instantly recognisable due to their sheer size and trunk-like snouts – hence the name. Wandering albatross An inspirational sight, the wandering albatross swoops effortlessly through the Antarctic skies. Boasting a wingspan of up to three metres and living up to sixty years of age, seeing these birds glide past your cruise ship is unforgettable. During the late winter months you can witness pairs of life-long partners arriving to breed on flat grasslands, where you can see their beautiful courtship display. This is one of the only times the albatross spends on land, making it a unique sight. Orca Found in pods of up to thirty whales, orca are found throughout the Antarctic region where it is estimated that 160,000 live. Also known as the killer whale, these mammals display excellent hunting behaviours, teaming up to prey on fish, penguins and seals. Gazing into the crisp waters of the Antarctic and catching sight of a dorsal fin will surely muster up a sense of excitement. On Antarctic cruises you are likely to spot pods of orca breaching the water as they scope out food and socialise with their family pod. Emperor penguin The giants of the penguin world, Emperor penguins are the dignified, elder statesman of Antarctica’s birds. From your stateroom balcony or on land, you can see colonies of up to 5,000 adults and chicks huddling together for warmth, shuffling around every so often to take turns on the outer circle. These birds rarely set foot on land, breeding on the frozen sea and catching food in the icy waters. After the female lays a single egg, the male incubates the unhatched chick while the female goes to sea to hunt for months at a time. He produces a large fat reserve to warm the egg and doesn’t eat, losing 45% of his body weight. The magnificence of Antarctica’s menagerie has to be seen to be believed, with an array of animals roaming the breath-taking glaciers and remote reaches. Embark on the luxury cruise of a lifetime and explore this frozen world in complete comfort.

Take a boat trip to Monemvasia – Monemvasia ,Greece  If your itinerary allows it, we recommend taking a short boat trip out to Monemvasia, Greece if you seek a secluded location, walking along unspoilt streets through a quaint medieval city. Take a walk around or up to the castle where you will be mesmerised by gorgeous sea views.   Cruise Concierge Top Tip: 🔎 Monemvasia has a small selection of dining locations available, including roof-top restaurants, offering mesmerising views. Some may say this portrays a Shirley Valentine story ambiance, for those familiar with the romantic comedy-drama film from 1989.   6. Local wine tasting – Santorini, Greece  Known for its stunning sea views and iconic, white-washed buildings, Santorini is a port of call for many of our Mediterranean cruises. During the 16th century the island was ruined by a volcanic eruption, and since then has recovered and blossomed into the stunning destination we visit today. A local wine-tasting experience is a recommended excursion when visiting this port due to Santorini’s grape vines growing within the islands volcanic soil and is said to give the wine a unique volcanic flavour!   7. Explore local farms tasting fresh olive oil – Crete, Greece  If your itinerary allows it visit Greece’s largest island, Crete. Its diverse environment and cultural monuments scattered over the island make it the perfect port to visit within your cruise itinerary. A hidden gem excursion involves exploring one of Crete’s local farms to taste fresh oil, crushed from the fresh olives grown within the orchards and ripened by the beautiful Cretan sun.  8. Experience monasteries in the sky – Meteora, Greece  Cruise Concierge Top Tip: 🔎 Meteora is a special location our concierge insisted must be mentioned when visiting central Greece! The stunning natural beauty of huge cliffs and rock pillars alongside the peaceful, spiritual monasteries are a sight to behold, purposely hidden amongst their surroundings to enforce serenity. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is of extreme importance to Greece and has been known as a holy place since 1995. This unique hidden gem from above is worth the visit.   9. Dive into Alexandria’s Classical Past – Egypt   For those of you who are interested in history beneath the water’s surface, taking a dive in Alexandria’s waters to witness the historic ancient Egyptian artifacts, statues and buildings is a must-do excursion. The sunken City of Cleopatra incorporates the entertainment of diving with an educational journey through sunken historic treasures that have many stories to tell. This excursion offers dives for both beginner and expert levels of diving, making it perfect whatever your abilities.  10. Experience a Solar Eclipse – At Sea  Another stunning display by nature to experience is an extremely rare solar eclipse which can be viewed on-board when at sea on a number of sailings, date dependant. A bucket list experience for many, this natural occurring excursion is one to look out for, whilst being positioned in the best viewing spot for maximum effect. The average cruisers will not experience something as spectacular as this, therefore it is definitely a hidden gem excursion!   This concludes our ten hidden gems of the Mediterranean, however, there are many more hidden gems waiting to be discovered and visited during any of our Mediterranean cruises.   Contact our dedicated Cruise Concierge to book your perfect Mediterranean Cruise.

South Africa’s Whale Watching Festival

South Africa’s Whale Watching Festival

Hermanus is a beautiful seaside town that accommodates breath-taking scenery situated on the Southern coast of Western Cape, South Africa. The area was once a small fishing town, however, has slowly become one of South Africa’s most recognised tourist locations.   What is the Hermanus Whale Watching Festival? Around 100,000 locals and tourists attend the Hermanus Whale Watching Festival each year, to witness the migration of Southern Right Whales. The festival is a celebration of this species’ beauty, with talks on how to protect our oceans and the habitat of these creatures as well as events, and more. Why do whales come to Hermanus? Due to being migratory, the Southern Right Whales are known to relocate to Southern Africa during the summer months, to breed and raise their young in the open warmer waters. When is the best time to see whales in Hermanus? The Southern Right Whales migrate to Hermanus from July through to November, therefore, will be visible to tourists during these months, within the day, alongside other species of whales such as the Humpback whale. The species is very inquisitive and will often investigate whale spotting tour boats which are available experiences from Hermanus, therefore allowing a closer look at this beautiful animal. There is also the opportunity to view the Hermanus whales by walking along the promenade which lines the cliffs of Walker Bay, South Africa! What is so special about the Southern Right Whale? Southern Right Whales have distinct features such as lacking a dorsal fin, possessing callosities covering their head, and large black bodies, often with a white stomach. Behaviours often found in this species of whale include tail sailing, where the whale’s tail remains in the same position outside the water for a few minutes at a time, jumping or partially jumping out of the water, and slapping the water surface with its fins or tail. With this in mind, spectators of the annual Whale Watching Festival are often thrilled with the performance the whales naturally produce! The Southern Right Whale is listed as endangered under the endangered species act, as a result of the whaling industry. When taking part in the Whale Watching Hermanus Festival a percentage of the money generated is contributed to valuable facilities and protection of these magnificent creatures by specialist charities. What does the festival entail? It has been said that Hermanus is the best destination to witness marine mammals, such as species of whales and dolphins, worldwide. Therefore, it is no surprise that during this three-day period local restaurants and bars, accommodation, and other establishments are prepared to cater for the thousands of spectators, as well as activities and entertainment being held on land, providing entertainment for all. Between the wonderful displays by the whales in the ocean, and the festivities onshore, this incredible whale-watching festival is certainly not one to miss if dates align with your cruise to Africa!

Port in focus: Miami

Port in focus: Miami

Port in focus: Miami Miami is Florida’s party capital. An energetic metropolis full of sassy style and electrifying energy that crackles through its neighbourhoods to a pulsating Latin beat. The city’s spectacular oceanfront location – with modern high rise hotels that line the dazzling white sands of Miami Beach – adds to its allure, along with a sun-drenched climate that injects a tropical feel to its heady mix of night-time temptations. After all, evenings are when this city comes alive to the salsa swaying rhythms of its dance clubs, rooftop bars with far-reaching views, and swanky selection of swish restaurants and hip intimate lounges. Miami’s Latino spirit merges with its classical roots in the hip enclave of South Beach where the bronzed and the beautiful come out to play. This is where uber-cool types cruise the main drag in high-profile Ferraris and Maseratis that scream excess and extravagance, though the real stars of South Beach are the famous Art Deco hotels lined up like grand old ladies along the main Ocean Drive, oozing old world glamour. These streets rose to worldwide fame thanks to Miami Vice as the opening shots were filmed at the Carlyle Hotel, though the stately pile that attracts most interest is the Versace Mansion, where celebrity designer Gianni Versace was shot in 2007. Miami’s downtown and business district is also waking up as more of a cultural hub thanks to the new Perez Art Museum Miami, along with a clutch of restaurants, bars and sporting venues breathing new life into the area. The art theme continues at the Wynwood Arts District where more than 70 galleries, museums and art collections underpin the city’s diverse appeal. Though with this being America, the shops are never far away - form high-end boutiques to massive mind-blowing malls - adding yet another facet to Miami’s mesmeric appeal. Top tip For a real flavour of the city, take a culinary walking tour of South Beach which not only highlights the area’s rich architectural heritage, but the varied spicy flavours of its South American cuisine.

Experience Rocky Mountaineer: A review of this iconic rail journey

Experience Rocky Mountaineer: A review of this iconic rail journey

Experience Rocky Mountaineer: A review of this iconic rail journey SixStarCruises' Managing Director, Alison Earnshaw, recently returned from an Alaska cruise and rail package with Celebrity Cruises. Read more to find out more about her trip below... I have recently returned from a long-awaited cruise in Alaska, this has been on my bucket list for some time as the trip had originally been planned for summer 2020. But better late than never and we travelled this June, cruising on board Celebrity Eclipse. There were many highlights of this trip including our stay in Vancouver, a trip to get up close and personal to the Hubbard Glacier and whale watching in Juneau. But I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some highlights of my journey on board Rocky Mountaineer, with some of my most special moments and top tips. We boarded the train in Vancouver travelling to Banff on their “Passage to the West” itinerary. This was a two-day journey, taking us through the Fraser Valley and on to Kamloops on the first day, and then on through the Sushswap region on the second day, past Castle Mountain to our final station in Banff. What is the GoldLeaf service like on Rocky Mountaineer? Before we travelled everyone told me that GoldLeaf is the only way to experience the Rocky Mountaineer and they were right! Rocky Mountaineer promises that their GoldLeaf service offers passengers “Five-star comfort meets five-star views” and they certainly delivered. We were treated to panoramic views whilst sitting comfortably within the full glass dome windows ensuring no obstructions to the expansive views. The scenery was breathtaking and my pictures do not do it justice. The true scale of the landscape and majesty of the surroundings is difficult to capture on camera but the memories will stay with me forever. Along with choosing from a seasonal menu inspired by the local area, we were served by an excellent team of hosts that shared their knowledge of landmarks and wildlife to ensure that we didn’t miss a thing. Having now returned I can look back on my two days on board Rocky Mountaineer and reflect on what was a fabulous and unique experience that I would recommend to anyone without hesitation. It surpassed all my expectations and truly was a highlight of my trip of a lifetime. What are you waiting for…Why not start planning your dream holiday and take a closer look at our Alaska rail and cruise holidays. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica on board Silver Endeavour It's the ultimate cruise of a lifetime - an expedition to Antarctica. Our luxury product executive Jo embarked on an epic expedition to Antarctica and shared her highlights from her trip. Silversea Expeditions   Silversea boasts the largest group of Expedition Ships in the industry and each vessel with its' individual amenities and a history of exploration that dates back to 1995, is a testament to Silversea's success at providing passengers with unforgettable expedition experiences. On board Silver Endeavour   An Expedition Cruise is something I've always dreamed of experiencing and it's safe to say it went beyond all of my expectations! Stepping aboard alongside Specialist Cruise Concierge, Katie, I was immediately in awe of not only Silver Endeavour's beauty but also Silversea's staff who gave us the warmest welcome! The ship is simply stunning with clean fresh décor and beautiful spaces, all built with a purpose. The staff are amazing and what stood out most to us was that they were as excited as us to be there as we departed, spotting whales and taking in the breathtaking scenery. Despite its' smaller size, like the rest of the ships in Silversea's fleet, you'll never be short of ways to entertain yourself on-board Silver Endeavour. When it comes to meal times, take your pick of four delightful dining options including Silversea's signature, The Restaurant, as well as The Grill and Il Terrazzino serving up authentic Italian dishes. If you'd prefer a light bite, the Arts Café is the perfect place to grab something to eat and enjoy a quiet catch up with your fellow passengers. We spent our time on-board staying in Silver Suite, which is a firm favourite amongst Silversea guests, featuring a private veranda boasting stunning ocean views, spacious living and dining areas and a personal butler service that made our voyage feel extra special. No matter which suite you choose to stay in, you can be sure to find everything you need to experience ultimate comfort at sea! Exploring Antarctica   Something that makes a Silversea Expedition so special is the destinations that they allow you to explore. Visiting the Polar Regions is something that not everyone can say they've experienced, so when I was offered the opportunity to sail around Antarctica on-board Silver Endeavour, I felt extremely lucky! Embarking from St George Island, we were so excited for our first landing in Orne Harbour. It was there that we took our first steps onto the Antarctic Peninsula, taking a hike to see colonies of chinstrap penguins and phenomenal views. That same afternoon we headed out on our first zodiac cruise at Whilhelmina Bay, during which we saw dramatic icebergs and humpback whales, which was an unbelievable start to our voyage. The next morning's activity was at Peterman island so we took a short zodiac to shore where the knowledgeable on-board expedition team had designed three trails, one out to see colonies of Gentoo penguins, another up to an amazing view point and finally to see some more colonies of Adelie penguins, which was a real bucket list ticker for us! An Unforgettable Experience   Another highlight of our Antarctic trip was the day we headed out on a kayak excursion. Taking a short zodiac out, we slid into the 2 man kayaks and then we were off to explore the tranquil waters of Paradise Bay and Skintorp Cove. It was phenomenal, the water was so still and calm and we kayaked in our group of 12, led by two guides Tommy and Tyler for around 4km, before stopping still for a moment to take in the calm and quiet, which was simply amazing. To make our already perfect day even better, before we headed back on-board, a zodiac of Silversea staff came out to us with champagne, hot chocolate and cookies, which is just one example of them going above and beyond to make every stage of our voyage incredible. I hope that I've inspired you to book that expedition cruise you've been dreaming of and offered some insights into life on-board an expedition ship.If you have any questions or would like to know more about what offers are available with Silversea, please get in touch with our Cruise Concierge. We provide personalised service, alongside our first-hand experiences and offers you won't find elsewhere. Simply call our Cruise Concierge today on 0808 278 3751.
