Destination Highlights

Broome

Broome is a laid-back coastal town in Western Australia and a common starting or finishing point for Kimberley expeditions. It is best known for the striking red cliffs and white sands of Cable Beach, as well as its rich history. The town blends Indigenous culture, Asian influences and frontier heritage, giving it a distinctive atmosphere.

img

Darwin

Darwin is the largest city near the Kimberley region and a major gateway for expeditions. The city has strong historical connections to World War II, as well as being known for its tropical climate, vibrant markets and multicultural food scene.

img

Kinge George River and King George Falls

The King George River winds through dramatic sandstone gorges in the far north of Western Australia and are home to the King George Falls. These are the tallest twin waterfalls in Western Australia, plunging dramatically from the plateau above. During the wet season they thunder with powerful cascades, while in the dry season they remain impressive but more tranquil.

img

Mitchell River & Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell River flows through one of the most remote parts of the Kimberley Plateau. Its highlight is Mitchell Falls, a spectacular series of tiered waterfalls that run through rugged sandstone and lush pockets of rainforest. The area is culturally significant to the Wunambal people and features ancient rock art.

img

Horizontal Falls

Horizontal Falls are created by massive tidal movements forcing seawater through two narrow gaps in the McLarty Range. The powerful currents create the appearance of a waterfall flowing sideways through the rock formations. Sir David Attenborough famously described it as one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

img

Montgomery Reef

Montgomery Reef is one of the largest inshore reefs in the world and a remarkable tidal phenomenon. As the tide falls, vast sections of reef rise from the ocean, sending water cascading off the edges like temporary waterfalls. The exposed reef attracts turtles, reef sharks and seabirds, making it a fascinating wildlife spot.

img

Prince Regent River

The Prince Regent River cuts through the heart of the Kimberley’s wilderness and is surrounded by pristine rainforest, sandstone cliffs and mangrove-lined channels. It lies within Prince Regent National Park, a vast protected area known for its biodiversity and dramatic landscapes. The river also leads to the beautiful King Cascade waterfall.

img

Vansittart Bay

Vansittart Bay is a remote and scenic anchorage along the Kimberley coast. It is particularly notable for its local rock art, which is among the oldest and most intricate Indigenous artworks in Australia. The area also contains the remains of a World War II aircraft that crash-landed nearby.

img

Buccaneer Archipelago

The Buccaneer Archipelago is a maze of more than 800 rugged islands scattered off the Kimberley coast. Powerful tides surge between the islands, shaping dramatic channels and whirlpools. The archipelago is also home to secluded beaches, ancient rock art sites and thriving marine life.

img

Adele Island

Adele Island lies off the northern Kimberley coast and is an important nature reserve. It is known for its extensive seabird colonies, including terns and frigatebirds, as well as its surrounding coral reefs. The island’s turquoise waters and pristine environment make it a beautiful and remote stop on many expeditions.

Lacepede Islands

The Lacepede Islands are a group of low coral islands and one of Australia’s most significant seabird breeding sites. Thousands of birds nest here, including brown boobies, roseate terns and frigatebirds. The surrounding waters are also a key habitat for green turtles.

Koolama Bay

Koolama Bay sits along the remote Kimberley coastline and holds historical significance from World War II. In 1942, the merchant vessel MV Koolama was attacked by Japanese aircraft and later beached here to prevent sinking. Today the bay is a quiet, scenic location surrounded by rugged cliffs and coastal wilderness.

Frequently asked questions

The Kimberley cruising season generally runs from April to October during the dry season. Early in the season (April - May) the waterfalls are at their most powerful following the wet season rains. Later months (August - October) usually offer warmer temperatures, calmer seas and excellent wildlife viewing.

The Kimberley is rich in wildlife both on land and in the water. Guests often see saltwater crocodiles, turtles, dolphins and reef sharks, along with a wide variety of seabirds. Depending on the time of year, humpback whales may also be spotted along the Kimberley coast.

The Kimberley is one of Australia’s most remote and untouched regions, with vast stretches of coastline that are inaccessible by road. Many areas can only be reached by boat or small aircraft. This remoteness is part of what makes a Kimberley expedition so special, offering pristine landscapes and a true sense of wilderness.

Most expeditions include guided Zodiac or tender excursions into rivers, waterfalls and coastal inlets. Guests may also take part in scenic helicopter flights, wildlife viewing, fishing and visits to ancient Indigenous rock art sites. Activities vary depending on the itinerary, tides and weather conditions.

Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended due to the warm tropical climate. Essentials include sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, as well as comfortable walking shoes and swimwear. Insect repellent and a small daypack are also useful for shore excursions.
