I've just returned from the experience of a lifetime, being amongst the first few guests to sail on board Emerald Cruises' brand-new yacht, Emerald Kaia, ahead of her official maiden voyage. Emerald pride themselves on providing a sailing experience like no other on the ocean, with small ships hosting no more than 128 guests, offering the look and feel of your own private yacht as you discover hidden gems around the Mediterranean.
As soon as we started to pull into Piraeus port, Emerald Kaia looked like no other ship I’ve seen before. She was super sleek to look at, you felt like you were stepping on board your own yacht, and that created that excitement and a feeling of exclusivity when docked alongside larger ships in port.

Embarkation was very smooth, and the staff were on hand to greet us with a refreshing glass of champagne and a warm welcome that felt as if the crew already knew us. We were shown to the Amici Lounge, where we sat and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings as we waited to be checked in. The style on board is contemporary and modern, with lots of neutral tones running through the ship, as well as plenty of splashes of colour and plenty of natural light coming through.
I stayed in a Balcony Suite, which had plenty of storage for you to unpack, umbrellas just in case of any rain whilst you're away and a Dyson hairdryer, meaning you don’t need to pack one. The bathroom had a large shower and a vanity unit, where the sink is, featuring ESPA toiletries. One of my favourite features of the room was the blackout blinds with a button located next to the balcony and one next to the bed, meaning you don’t need to get up to shut them once you’ve got tucked up in the bed, and you can open them in the morning to allow light through, ready to start your day.

We received a daily planner in our room in the evening, ready for the next day, which lists all activities available on board, as well as information on any shore excursions, weather, and opening hours for all the spaces on board. You can start your morning with yoga with the wellness coach on board or head to the gym, which is open 24 hours, so you can exercise when you want to.
There are plenty of pools on board, which is quite unusual for a ship of this size, meaning they never get crowded. Whether you wish to enjoy a cool glass of Champagne from the Sky Pool and Bar at the front of the ship, soak up the sunshine in the infinity-style Aqua Pool, or take a dip in the serenity of the Spa Pool, there's always plenty of space to relax. If you need to escape indoors at any time during the day, the Observation Lounge offers panoramic views and is stocked with plenty of books and board games. You can also grab a tea and coffee, as well as a cookie or two, which are made on board and are amazing!

If they have the opportunity, the crew will launch the Marina Platform at the back of the ship. It’s an incredible inflatable that has a small seating area for you to sit and relax and another section, which is under shade, where you can paddle your feet, chat with fellow guests and enjoy a refreshing drink. There is also an inflatable slide, which the crew will attach to the side of the yacht and then you’re free to enjoy a dip in the ocean. This isn’t something you see on the bigger luxury lines, which adds to the feeling of having your own private yacht.
There are three dining venues available on board, each offering an excellent variety of options. Breakfast is an open-style buffet in La Cucina with plenty of fresh fruit and yoghurts available, as well as sweet treats. You’re also able to help yourself to some cooked items such as bacon, scrambled eggs, etc., and there are menus on the table, which you can order. I went for a freshly cooked omelette one morning, which was delicious.

For lunch we were lucky enough to sample Solea Bar & Bistro, which has a beautiful Mediterranean feel and is a great space to enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner if you want a more casual feel. There is a great choice on the menu, including bowls and salads, sharing bites, and I highly recommend trying the truffle and parmesan fries and the watermelon, feta and mint skewers. There is also a variety of burgers, including a vegetarian option and a choice of pizzas to enjoy.
The second evening, I was lucky enough to sample the Asian Night Market, which is an additional charge, but I highly recommend trying it one evening whilst on board. It offers a set menu in a small, intimate venue just outside of La Cucina. It’s very Teppanyaki style as you sit around and the chef explains what you’re going to be eating, and there is also someone there to ensure your glass is always topped up!

My overall time on board Emerald Kaia was incredible and truly very special. She is unlike any other ship I’ve sailed on before, as it truly did feel like having your own yacht. The open bridge policy and the warm and welcoming staff make it feel like a home away from home. For me, an Emerald Cruises sailing is perfect for those looking for something that little bit different, offering a more intimate, relaxed feel to cruising yet with all the luxury touches and the options to relax, drink and dine in different venues.
