There’s a fair chance that you’ve attended a corporate function or charity event which has featured a guest speaker or two. Often, they’ve pursued a career relevant to the company or event involved or maybe they’re a celebrity who’s been chosen for their wit, wisdom and observational appeal. It’s very much the same kind of thinking that goes into your luxury voyage and the cruise ship guest speakers chosen to appear on it. With that in mind, here’s a look at some luxury cruise ship guest speakers who’ve offered to share their knowledge and wisdom while on the ocean waves.
Buzz Aldrin
Crystal Cruises’ past roster of cruise ship guest speakers reads like a roll-call of experts and icons and the line prides itself on offering, in its own words, “a galaxy of celebrity speakers”. Top of the list as far as American icons go is surely Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. It must’ve made for an even more fascinating cruise to hear Buzz’s insights on space travel and hear him describe in his own words just how it felt to do the lunar walk.
Kirk Douglas
A totally different kind of icon who sailed with Crystal Cruises, screen legend Kirk Douglas is surely the oldest living movie star ever to have shared his insights on the ocean waves. Sparticus himself recently reached the age of 97 and even though it was some time ago when he travelled with Crystal Cruises, even then, he would’ve had a lifetime of experiences and observations to draw on, discussing everything from the changing face of Hollywood to keeping active in old age.
Paul Deegan
At Six Star Cruises, we sometimes like to tell you about bucket list experiences you can fulfill on a cruise. While we can’t take you to Everest, climbing the monumental mountain is something which features on the lists of some of the more adventurous and it’s something which Paul Deegan has done. Seabourn certainly saw the appeal of his experiences and enlisted him in its Seabourn Conversations programme for its 2013 world cruise.
Terry Greenberg
Azamara Club Cruises enlisted former Canadian diplomat Terry Greenberg as a destination lecturer throughout 2013 to offer some expert perspective on a number of their Far East cruises. Terry’s spent his entire life studying East Asian cultures and has spent over 23 years of his life in the region. When it comes to cruise ship guest speakers with destination knowledge, Terry’s one of the cruise ship guest speakers that it’s useful to have on your Far East cruise.
Michael Buerk
Forever known to many BBC-watching Britons as the face of BBC news correspondence throughout the 1980s and as presenter of emergency docudrama 999, Michael Buerk lent his expertise to enrich a number of sailings on-board Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper. Buerk was the man on the ground during the Ethiopian famine in 1984, and his reporting inspired the ensuing Band Aid charity effort and helped to open the world’s eyes to the harrowing events.
Terry Waite
Another Briton forever in the British consciousness and enlisted by Silversea Cruises is for special envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Terry Waite. After negotiating the release of hostages in Libya and Iran, in 1987 Terry himself was taken hostage for four and a half years. Since his release, he’s pursued a number of humanitarian activities and spends a portion of his time telling of his experiences through writing and lectures.
Kim Koeller
World-class cuisine is a big part of any luxury cruise but if you suffer from a food allergy, you may be wondering how this impacts on your enjoyment and how you’ll be catered for. Azamara Club Cruises are all too aware of the allergy issue and so enlisted the help of world-renowned author and allergy expert Kim Koeller to lecture on Travelling and Dining with Food Allergies. Good food for thought for both consumer and industry professionals alike.
