Apra, Guam Cruise Port

In the heart of the Pacific lies the port of Apra on Guam, a fantastic destination if you're looking for a secluded island getaway. This deep natural harbour is a big draw for tourists, being a popular place for surfing, boating and scuba diving – as well as being home to some unique aquatic wildlife and coral.

As Guam's single point of entry by ship, Apra has had a rich and varied history. The island itself has been at the centre of conflict, European colonial rule and is still home to a US naval base – a legacy of its changing ownership between Spain, Japan and the United States – yet the region's native Chamorro culture has still survived to this day.

Sightseeing in Apra

History and tourism on Guam sit side-by-side with its use as a naval base, and guided shore excursions are a great way to see all that the island has to offer. There's something for everyone on a tour to Apra – whether you'd like to learn more about the island's importance as a site of conflict during the Pacific Campaign in the Second World War, or if you'd prefer to see its natural beauty, native culture or historic colonial architecture.

Gef Pa'go Inarajan

Get a true feel for Guam's indigenous culture with a road trip through the village of Inarajan, where you'll find yourself at the meeting point of the old and the new on this beautiful island. Here you'll find monuments and traditional building techniques that celebrate the mastery of the island's native Chamorro people – as well as the Gef Pa'go, a replica village surrounded by palms, built using natural materials to give a true feel for life on the island in ages past. Immerse yourself in Guam's history through traditional art and dance, guided by a local cultural interpreter.

Tailafak Bridge and Gardens

For a better look at the colonial element of Guam's past, another stop on your road tour of the island will give you the chance to the double-arched bridge that spans the river Tailafak. Originally made of wood when it was built in the late 18th century, this charming bridge was later rebuilt in stone and makes for a popular setting for a photo opportunity during a visit to the island – being surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens and looking out to the sea beyond.

South Pacific Memorial Park

Some island excursions may give you the chance to see Yigo village and the adjoining South Pacific Memorial Park, a site that commemorates the island's sad past as a theatre of conflict – but also stands as a lasting memorial to peace. Visitors to the area will find a large white monument, under which the remains of Japanese soldiers are buried; as well as a Buddhist chapel where remnants of the Second World War can be found.

Shopping in Apra

Guam's duty-free status makes it a fantastic place for keen shoppers. The Tumon resort area offers a great choice of shopping malls, selling well-known global brands if you're looking for a deal on jewellery, clothing and fragrances. If you're more of the mind to take home some traditional souvenirs, you'll also be able to find plenty of stores with intricate wooden carvings and colourful crafts on display.

Eating Out in Apra

Despite Guam's small size, the island offers visitors a fantastic choice of places to eat. There's no shortage of eateries where you'll be able to tuck into the delicious, freshly-caught seafood – often baked or grilled in traditional Pacific island style. Alternatively, take a trip to the hotels and restaurants around the island's resort area, where you'll be able to find a rich choice of cuisine from around the world.
