Belawan, Lake Toba, Sumatra - Cruise Port

If your cruise includes a visit to the beautiful port city of Belawan, on the island of Sumatra, then you can expect to see the ‘real' side of Indonesia. Belawan isn't considered to be the prettiest part of the country, and is fairly industrial, but it's surrounded by rivers, jungles and beautiful beaches that offer an interesting contrast. Many cruisers feel that Belawan is more authentic than Bali, which is a far more popular city for shore excursions.

Sightseeing in Belawan

It's not typical to stay close to the port or to explore the centre of the city. Instead, you'll have time to move away from the centre to mosques, palaces and temples down bumpy, sandy roads. Some attractions take hours to reach, and others are located in the nearby town of Medan. Visits to Lake Toba, which covers 440 square miles, are a favourite with new and experienced cruisers. Taxi drivers will be happy to take you on a tour of major attractions, and there are a few that you won't want to miss:

Orangutan Rehabilitation CentreThis centre is located in the Gunung Leuser National Park. Orphaned orangutans are raised at the centre, before being released into the wild. Visitors can learn about the centre's work, and can see its current residents up close. Getting to Gunung Leuser can take more than four hours, but it's a scenic drive through the jungle.

Tjong A Fie Mansion

This impressive mansion once belonged to a plantation owner. It's an extravagant building that's open to the public, with guides that provide information about the region's history and the resident family's past.

Sultan Deli Palace

This elaborate, brightly-coloured palace is officially known as Istana Maimun Palace. It's a landmark in Medan, near Belawan, and has thirty rooms. It's another building that's open to visitors, and is still the home of the Sultan of Deli who no longer holds any official power.

Shopping in Belawan

If you're using your visit to Belawan as an opportunity to shop, then you'll want to browse some of the city's open-air markets. Batik markets are the perfect place to buy colourful pieces of material, textile and fabric, whilst the city's general markets sell lovely ornaments and decorative items as well as art, collectables and antiques. Woven baskets and carved figurines are great gifts to take back for friends and family, and are easy to find in the city's shops as well as on local market stalls.

Eating out in Belawan

The people of Belawan enjoy fresh fish, often served with rice and a selection of seasonal vegetables. Fish dishes are a staple, and it's not unusual for food to be heavily spiced. Street sellers will tempt you with sweet treats ranging from banana fritters to coconut cookies, whilst flavoured peanuts are regularly served as a snack or meal accompaniment.

Curry dishes and noodles are amongst the most common foods you'll find on restaurant menus, and vegetarian diets are very well catered for. You might also want to try freshly prepared savoury and sweet breads, which are often toasted and might be served as sandwiches with meat, or as a side order for a spicy curry. Before leaving Belawan, take time to find a local ice cream shop selling luxury hand-turned ice cream. It's homemade using local ingredients, and is ideal if you need to cool down following a busy day in the jungle.
