Fukuoka, Japan Cruise Port

The diversity and dynamism of Fukuoka in southern Japan have made it a popular draw for tourists in recent years, and with a vast range of cultural attractions it's not hard to see why. The city successfully combines traditional Japanese sightseeing with modern, multicultural design, and is often cited as Japan's gateway to the rest of Asia.

Sightseeing in Fukuoka

Fukuoka is well-known for its green spaces, which divide the city up and give a distinct sense of balance to the urban landscape. The city's primary trade lies in the service sector, and combined with its heritage as a port you'll find plenty of tourist-friendly places to visit during your time here.

Fukuoka Art, History and Folk Museums

Culture lovers will find themselves spoiled for choice during their trip to Fukuoka, with a fantastic selection of museums to visit. Get your bearings on local history with a trip to the City Museum, followed by a look around the Hakata Machiya Museum to find out more about the culture and customs in the region.  Alternatively, search out the Asian Art Museum for a look at the wider development of heritage in this part of the world; or try the Genko Museum, which documents the Mongol invasion in the area, and the spectacular Japanese victory thanks to a typhoon – the original Kamikaze (holy wind).

Hakata

Tourists to Fukuoka are often drawn to Hakata Canal City, a modern development filled with distinctive red buildings, plentiful public art and a curved waterway running the length of the leisure complex. Built as a redevelopment project in 1996, Canal City was intended as a separate city within the city of Fukuoka – a place devoted to shopping and entertainment, where the buildings of surrounding Fukuoka are barely visible. Relax and enjoy yourself as you wander around the waterway and bright modern architecture, and be sure to catch one of the daily performances on the city's central stage.

Ohori Park

Nestled in the heart of the bustling city is Ohori Park, a wide public space with a large pond at its centre. Many people come here from the city to relax and stroll the long path that surrounds the water, or wander along the bridges and islands that cross its centre. However the true gem of the park is tucked away to one side – the Japanese Garden. This beautiful spot offers visitors a slice of traditional Japan, with all the hallmarks of the nation's classical culture – beautifully sculpted gardens, calming ponds and unmistakable architecture and interior design.

Shopping in Fukuoka

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable shopping trip if you visit Fukuoka. Find traditional Japanese clothing and clay Hakata dolls, ideal souvenirs which are available in boutique stores; or head to the city centre, known as Tenjin, to find a nest of shopping complexes which are just as popular with the locals as with tourists. For the more technologically minded, there's also an area of the city dedicated to robotics and cybernetics – complete with demonstrations of the latest tech.

Eating Out in Fukuoka

You won't find it hard to come across fantastic places to eat during your time in Fukuoka; there are sushi and ramen joints aplenty, and you won't have to worry about finding a good variety of fish dishes in the city. Dine in ultra-modern settings, homely and traditional alternatives, or establishments that take ‘different' to a whole new level – allowing you to fish for your supper in giant tanks, before celebrating your catch and whisking it off to be cooked.
