Grand Bay, Canouan, Grenadines

The picturesque small island of Canouan is part of the cluster of St. Vincent and the Grenadines islands with the main yacht moorings based in Grand Bay. The island has a very laid back and slow pace to it but despite its tiny size (3 ½ miles long by 1 ¼ miles wide) there is plenty to do for visitors. It boasts interesting history and fascinating culture with fabulous natural sights and environment to explore..

Sightseeing in Grand Bay

Located in Grand Bay, the Tamarind Beach Hotel and Yacht Club resort dominates the coastline with its traditional beachfront hideaways dotted along the white powdery sands. Although it's a hotel, all visitors to the island are welcome to visit and explore its expansive grounds. The island also boasts its own golf course and a 900ft mountain to explore, while the bay provides easy access to the neighbouring islands via day boat excursions. Here are just a few of the things to see and do in and around Grand Bay:

Grand Bay Beach is the longest stretch of pristine white sands on the island. It is the perfect location to relax and unwind on one of the luxurious day beds provided (small surcharge may apply) or seek shade under a palm tree. The calm clear waters are perfect for swimming and a safe option for families. There are food and drink outlets available as well as toilets so you have everything you need for a chilled out day on the beach.

Thanks to the reef and a number of ‘treasures' located under the water the area is perfect for diving and snorkelling for all abilities. You can dive down 30 feet to discover a giant stone called Gibraltar which is surrounded by vibrantly coloured fish and flora. Heading towards the Southeast coast, Windward Bay is a large, calm lagoon which gets protection from an extensive barrier reef. This is a beautiful and serene snorkelling spot suitable to all levels. More adventurous visitors are able to enjoy some night diving expeditions with trips and courses supplied by one of the local PADI Diving schools.

Golf lovers will enjoy the Grenadines Estate Golf Club. Designed by Jim Fazio it offers 18 holes of spectacular scenery looking out to the Caribbean Sea. Part of the course is set on elevated mountainous terrain which provides panoramic views from your elevated position. Some of the greens are on the edge of a cliff adding to their beauty but also to their difficulty. Novices, and golfers looking for tips to improve their game, can get expert tuition from a resident pro and there are golf buggies and club rental available.

Shopping in Grand Bay

Being a Caribbean island of such a small size a number of the items have to be brought in. There are a few local stores on the island that cater to the small resident population and you might be able to find some souvenirs and gifts here. The best place to shop for presents and souvenirs, and with a larger range to choose from, is the boutique at The Tamarind Beach Hotel and Karen's Boutique. These stores stock postcards and gifts as well as a small range of beachwear.

Dining In Grand Bay

There are quite a few places to dine on the island, although many restaurants form part of the island's resorts rather than being independent restaurants. Pirates Cove Bar is one place that is frequented by locals and tourists alike. It is only open in the evenings and serves a wide range of freshly prepared pizza, fish, and meat and pasta dishes with take away available. Occasionally they host a buffet night which sees the venue become very busy indeed.  The Palapa Restaurant is idyllically placed next to the water's edge. Diners are able to enjoy mouth-watering international dishes with freshly caught seafood and pizzas made on the wood burning stove. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For slightly more formal dining, choose Bellini's Bar and Bistro for an elegant atmosphere, sumptuous cocktails and freshly grilled seafood caught only hours earlier.
