As one the Channel Islands, Jersey is a self-governing British crown dependency but is not directly governed by the United Kingdom. The island is recognised as being part of the ancient Duchy of Normandy, once ruled by the Duke of Normandy, who was related to but not greatly influenced by the king or queen of England. Mont Orgueil Castle is situated on the Gorey Coast overlooking the sea and was constructed over 600 years ago to protect the island from the hostile French army. These days, the fortress is a popular tourist attraction for the many visitors to the island, boasting an array of winding staircases and mysterious rooms and vaults for intrigued visitors to explore and discover. Elizabeth Castle can be found in St Aubin's Bay and was built more than 300 years ago. The castle is a fabulous example of Jersey's heritage and culture as well as being a great place to learn more about the region's long and illustrious history. Guests can reach the castle either by foot at low tide or on the ferry which transports visitors across.

A collection of excellent and informative museums are situated across Jersey, offering tourists a greater insight into the history and culture of this captivating Channel Island. Popular and fascinating museums include the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum and Occupational Tapestry as well as the Pallot Steam, Motor and General Museum.

Jersey War Tunnels

The Jersey War Tunnels are a great place to learn more about the plight of the people of Jersey during the Nazi occupation of the Second World War. The systems of tunnels, also known as Hohlgangsalage 8, were built using slave labourers from all over Europe. Nowadays, the tunnels are a reminder of the horrors of the Nazi activity on the island.
